worked and then it wont start.

It was working perfectly "gold" medal good then: nothing.

I'll try re-installing with a fresh bottle soon.
But here is the log:

It's probably due to this:

We have confirmed that a number of recent bugs in Steam games are due to changes in the in-game community overlay DLL. For some games, disabling the in-game community feature via Steam's settings is good enough to fix the problem. For other games, that's not enough.

For those, you can go into the Wine Configuration (winecfg) tool via Manage Bottles -> select bottle with Steam -> Control Panel. On winecfg's Applications tab, click Add Application. Select the executable of the Steam game that's having the problem (or just type its filename, like foobar.exe) and click Open. Select the Libraries tab of winecfg. Type GameOverlayRenderer in the "New override for library" edit field, click the Add button, click the Edit button, select Disable, click OK, and click OK. That prevents the in-game community overlay from even being loaded for that game.

If you don't use the in-game community, you might find it simpler to just disable it for the whole bottle. To do that, just skip the above steps involving the Applications tab of winecfg. Just leave it with Default Settings selected, which is how it starts, and go straight to the Libraries tab and proceed from there.

That didn't do anything. Which I was suspecting it wouldn't since I had already disabled the in-game overlay form the steam dialogs.
Log to follow.

I need to try a fresh new Steam bottle.

New Bottle didn't fix a thing.

I'm suspecting the error has to do with "odbc32.dll" since they plug into something on the Linux side (something I may have removed or altered without knowing). It's a database dynamic library. Any ideas?

Hi,

Bit of a weird one...(a game needing odbc)....but at any rate,

those dlls (odbc.dll depends on another) are part of the MDAC install
targets in the 'Runtime Supports Area' of the cxinstaller GUI...do you
have one of these installed? (or did the game installation include such?)

Cheers!

I'll check, but I don't think so it's a straight Steam bottle.

Reason why I suspected the odbc.dll, is that while researching it, I learned that it pipes commands to the linx odbc implementation. I had installed k3b (latest version) manually and then uninstalled it and thought that may have done something to the odbc thingy since it connects to kde libraries. I removed the odbc thingy and dependencies in my install and the game still didn't play. And the only program that cried to be uninstalled with odbc was a kde4 library as I thought.
K3b is (was?) my favorite cd burning program but brasero has made such improvements it wasn't worth the hassle of having a manually installed kde4 app that could break stuff just hanging out in my system.

So I'm kinda back to square one: let's try anything mode.

OMG! It worked!!
I installed: Microsoft Data Access Comp. 2.8 SP1
and it started it up.

Now just working out some window(-ed) issues: the intro videos do some weird stuff (which they did before) but it all looks good afterwards!

Cheers!

Groovy...another dependency isolated! Same as before my friend - when you
finish poking at the other issue and are happy it's all in order, just
hoist a tip&trick in these regards for help the future out (prophecy,
right? 8)

Cheers!

Will do.
I'm still fiddling with the screen controls see if I find an optimal setting. Or at least explain what happens. :)
