Poor performance with Heroes of the Storm

I have been trying with no success to get Heroes of the Storm to perform well. With a 5 star rating I would expect that it would work well out of the box.

I have an NVIDIA GTX 950 GPU, Intel i5 2500K, 16GB ram, Samsug EVO SSD. In windows land I have everything turned up and get 60 fps. Using POL I get 40 fps in the menus, and in Crossover I get 10 fps in menus and game, and if I try and change the settings to high I get out of VRAM issues.

I am new to Crossover and have not gamed in Linux before, though I am familiar with linux. I am using Ubuntu 16.04, and I have installed and activated the proprietary drivers. I had similar results with Linux Mint 18.1.

I feel like there is something very basic I am missing, but don't know what it is.

This also helped me with performance:

You can set "-dx9" in the game's startup parameters to force DX9 mode and get past this error.
