A bit of Googling has led to my conclusion that Directx 9, VC++2008 and .NET 2 are likely to be needed- will report shortly, almost finished installing these components.

With these installed, the game runs fine up to the title screen- I haven't actually started playing the game, since I have to learn how, and the tutorial looks long...

The tutorial runs well, no lagging or anything seemingly out of place.
I think the game only needs Directx 9, nothing else... I'm just going to check that.
Tutorial runs perfectly as far as I can tell...
