Hey Guys & Gals,

I'm a first time user of cxmac, I downloaded and installed 6.1 and got steam working with no problems. I installed HL2 and the install went off without a hitch, however I'm not able to get the game working. I'm running a macbook pro 2.16ghz core duo with 2gb ram, 100gb 7200rpm drive, radeon x1600 256mb. When HL2 starts all I get a whole bunch of multicolored vertical lines that slightly change color to green or purple. But nothing else appears. I tried using the dxlevel 70 and setting the -width and -height. This got me a little further, I can actually hear the intro now, but still the same video issues. Any help would be appreciated. If I get this working I'll be a paying customer for sure!

Thanks,

Are you running 6.01 or 6.1? 6.1 has not been released yet and is only out in beta.

In 6.01 the intro to HL2 does not play, normally all you see is black. You hear the intro, but nothing is displayed. This bug is fixed in 6.1.

In 6.01, If you wait long enough the game starts off in the train station. At that point the graphics should mostly be fine.

If you still see only green and purple even after waiting for the intro to complete, you can try the following:

  1. Install all the latest updates to your system by running System update.
  2. Close any other applications running in the background. They should not conflict, but you never know.
  3. Try downloading some native mac game demo and see if you get 3d graphics. Your graphics card may have hardware issues.
  4. Wait for 6.1 to see if it fixes your issues.

My apologies, I'm actually running 6.0.1 AND I've figured out the problem. I installed switchresx a few months back, it allows me to create custom resolutions that I can use with my matrox dualhead2go, that was messing around with my video card. It somehow screwed up my settings so that even if I try to change the resolution of the macbook pro display the screen ends up with the colorful lines. So I removed it and now HL2 works like a charm! A little slow to loading up the game, but once it's loaded it runs perfectly fine!

Thanks!

Nice. I'm glad you figured it out. 😊
