Installation problems

I'm using the 6.0.0 demo, and am unable to successfully get HL2 to install on my Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro.

Currently, what happens is that upon inserting my HL2 CDs, CrossOver does not recognise the installer, so I select the "Install Unrecognised Software" option. It starts running the installer, I work through the screens and then it starts copying files from the CD. It copies the first file fine (takes 3-5 minutes for 480Mb), then starts on the second big file (1.8Gb) and never finishes. I've left it running for almost two hours and eventually it just stops responding. I have to kill the session to get control back.

I've tried installing it in windows 2000 and windows XP bottles. Any other suggestions?

Yeah, don't use the CDs. Download HL2 from Steam itself. The CDs are so outdated right now Steam forces you to redownload the entire game anyway.

Ok, that works, thanks.

everytime i enter my cd key it tells me that: "Installation of Half-Life 2 Game of the Year is required before continuing. Please insert your Half-Life 2 Game of the Year CD/DVD into the drive and select 'install' from the autorun menu."

am i screwed because i have the game of the year edition?

Hmmm, I hope not. That would be pretty rude of Valve to require that when you have a perfectly valid CD key. I suppose the best recourse for you right now is to send Valve an email. Do not report to Valve that you are trying to install on Linux however. They will just give you the standard blah blah about how Linux is not supported.

that's how i see it. i mean, they got their money, isn't that what they want. i scoured the support forums and answers first but the one single mention of the game of the year edition was someone trying to run it in india... yeah. so i sent a message to the steam support center and i'm just waiting for a reply. ha and i made sure not to mention crossover or anything.

edit: someone on the steam forums told me that "you have to install from disk the first time only.after that it is verified with your account. this is how retail versions work now". is that true? how did anyone else here download their half-life 2 without the cd/dvd?

David, the last couple weeks been having the same problem as you origionally with installing Halflife2... it wont let me install them from the cd's and sits there forever installing the first file... I know you have to download the game the steam, but as dump as it sounds i cant figure out how to do this ?? How did you download the game from Steam? Plz aid me

My solution was to boot up Parallels, install just Steam and register from there. When you re-login to Steam from CrossOver, it knows you've registered.

Seems the Steam engine does not recognize when the DVD is inserted from CrossOver.
