Installing From CD-ROM

Okay I am a total beginner at this. I don't have a ton of knowledge about computers and I am very much a beginner at crossover.

While I am installing the game I see the screen for a bit and then it goes black. I know this is something normal people have experienced however I am using a CD so I am not sure if the -useoldlauncher code is working or even if I am using it right. (do I use quotes? ETC...)

It comes with 2 disks so I am at a loss of when I need to put the new disk in or even if I need to put in the serial code. I am at a loss at the moment and probably need some step by step instructions. If anyone is able to help that would be amazing!

Let me know if I can add more complete data from my end.

I don't known anything about the DVD installation but let's assume a few things:

  • GW2Setup copies a GW2.exe and (some) GW2.dat from DVD to disk, then starts GW2.exe. This should work fine with CrossOver. Note that the final GW2.dat is around 18GB so may fit on 2 DVDs, that may explain why you have 2 DVDs. If this step does not work, you still have the option to download the client directly from the server, it will take a while but will work.
  • GW2.exe starts and updates itself from the server.
  • GW2.exe downloads the resources missing on the DVD from the server.

If your GW2.exe does update itself from the server, then you can no longer use -useoldlauncher as it has been disabled by the last build of GW2. You need to pass the option -dx9single that will make the new launcher (and the game) work. You don't need quotes for these options as they do not contain spaces.

Thank you for being willing to help! A few things that I am running into:

When I am imputing the command for -dx9single (I have it set to the bottle I am using to install Guild wars on) I get an error "There is no Windows program configured to open this type of file." after this I am getting "The command "-dx9single" returned 1."

The DVD stops running at around the point that I get a black screen for the installer window. Which I assume means I need to change DVD's or provide some form of input on my end (which I can't see because of a black screen).

Once again I appreciate the help hopefully this will start to work!

I am also trying to install from cd rom and i'm having no luck. The files that are contained within the cd's (that i assume have all the data) are .js files in 5 parts. I have tried running the disk as an other application and when this happens about 15 seconds later the gw2 launcher pops up and it tries downloading the whole client i believe. (The client crashing every 10 mb of data downloaded error there quite a few people have run into).

My question is is there are way for crossover to recognize the .js files while installing or am i doing something wrong? Thank you.

So an update to my predicament as I continue to try to install.

Now I get an error that says the bottle I am trying to create already exists and it skips the entire install altogether. I am about to give up and just go bootcamp it and try to create enough space on my harddrive to do that. I would really rather not have to resort to bootcamp though...

You need to run Guild Wars 2 with the parameter -dx9single.

Here is the full procedure to start the game with the parameter. If you do have a Gw2.exe file on your disk, that is all you need to play, data may be downloaded over your Internet connection.

Instructions are for Mac and may slightly differ on Linux:

  • Start CrossOver
  • In the "Programs" menu
  • Select "Launch a command..." (or something similar, my CrossOver is not in English)
  • This should open a window with the list of bottles and an input for the "Command"
  • Click "Browse"
  • Search for your installation of Guild Wars 2 and choose Gw2.exe
  • The "Command" input should now contain the full path to Gw2.exe between quotes
  • After the quotes, type a space followed by -dx9single
  • On my installation, it looks like that: "/Jeux/Guild Wars 2/Gw2.exe" -dx9single
  • Click "Run"
  • The game should start and update itself
  • Meanwhile, you can click "Add to Programs menu" to add a shortcut called "Gw2" for later use in the "Programs" menu, you will be able to directly start this shortcut instead of repeating the whole procedure

EDIT: You can try to do something similar for Gw2Setup.exe which is on your DVD.

First: go back to the top of the forum and download a new version of the special build after 5:10 CST on August 28 and things will be way easier!

Second - despite the fact that you have a disc, you should probably install from the web. I don't know with 100% certainty that the disc will do you no good, but the game appears to update itself entirely by downloading, even after a lengthy disc install.

So, with the latest and greatest build (e.g., after 5:00 today, Wednesday, 8/28/2012), CrossOver's installer will recognize your disc. But, you are better off just downloading 'Gw2Setupe.exe' from the ArenaNet web-site and using that, because you're going to end up downloading everything anyway (afaict), and that'll save you the time of doing a disc install (14G, lengthy) that will be wiped out right away by the downloader update.

Cheers,

Josh.
