Works Great in Crossover Games - Mac 9.0.

I followed the tips & tricks and forum suggestions to get it sort of working 8.1.4, but suffered repeated crashes.

Under 9.0, it is MUCH more stable. I can run the game in different resolutions now, I can load easily using the load button. A couple of times, I still got a crash, but only when exiting.

I also tracked down the font that was causing the garbled yellow fonts on some of the menus:
lucon.ttf

You need to put this font in the 'fonts' folder under 'windows' in the C drive for the bottle where you put GCII. Fonts will magically clear up. There might still be a little garbling, but nothing major.

I don't have the CDs so I'm moving the installation file from my dad's PC to my mac. It worked perfectly the first time, then I changed the resolution, and it won't launch again. How do I fix this? I'm so sad, I purchased CrossOver solely for this game....

You can try using the Wine Configuration (winecfg) control panel, accessible from the Manage Bottles window, to set the bottle to use a virtual desktop window. In winecfg, on the Graphics, tab, enable "Emulate a virtual desktop". OK out of winecfg and then see if you can run GalCivII.

It's not that I can't "see" anything, it's just that for whatever reason, Cross Over 9.0 has stopped even trying to launch the game. I don't know what happened, but it doesn't make sense that deleting Cross Over 9.0 and reinstalling it doesn't let me start the game up again. Is there some sort of way of cleanly removing CrossOver 9.0 so that I can try to re-create the initial success of using this game?

-EDIT- I did change the settings like you suggested, but unfortunately it didn't change the "serious error" that was preventing the game from launching via Run Command, and Cross Over games doesn't even attempt to load the game when I double click the .exe file from the C-Directory directly.

Well, the only thing I can think of is look to make sure nothing was left behind when you deleted Crossover Games.

Check your applications folder.
Then, check the folder under your username. Check library/application support/crossover games and see if there's a folder still there for some reason.

I would generally think that uninstalling CXG and the game would completely remove any changes.

I'm running GC Ultimate from the CD, so it's possible that the Impulse version might be slightly different, but if it was working once, I'd say chances are good that we can make it work again.

except replace "CrossOver" with "CrossOver Games" (or, for the plist file, "CrossOverGames").

Yeah that's what I was hoping. So I tried the "Clear and Rebuild Programs Menu..." option, and Cross Over didn't clean anything. Maybe it's just not responsive? Then I also went into the library, and application support, found a folder there, and cleaned it out too.

I am baffled as to what happened.... :( Still not loading the game, or anything I double click.

Yeah I did the fresh start too. But I'm not sure if you know what I'm trying to say, but every time i double click the GalCiv2.exe, it just goes back to the CXG manage bottles page. The first time i clicked it IN the c-directory of manage bottles, it gave me a message that I was about to open CXG for the first time, even though I had clearly already installed it.

So I'm not sure what's going on :(

-EDIT- Just to clarify what I'm doing, I'm not "installing" anything, I just drag and dropped the zip file into c-drive and unzipped, then clicked the .exe for the game.

I still don't understand how this worked perfectly the first time, then upon changing resolution and sound settings, the game can't launch anymore. Any help is extremely appreciated.

It's possible that the game saved some settings outside of the bottle or any CrossOver-specific location. In particular, some games save settings to the My Documents folder in the bottle, which is actually a link to your account's main Documents folder. So, in other words, check for anything related to GalCiv in your Documents folder and remove that.

Under User -> Documents -> My Games, there was a file for galciv suprisingly enough. I put all the files into the trash can and still nothing.

Thanks for trying to help though, it's really appreciated.

Digressing in the conversation a little bit, I just want to address one thing:
If you want to do a clean reinstall of Crossover Games (CXGames), do NOT just delete the application. The best way to do it is as follows:

  1. Open CXGames.
  2. Go to the bottle manager and delete all of your bottles (within CXGames).
  3. Then delete the application.

If you don't do step 2, then you probably won't get rid of all of your bottle information and can have problems. Just a tip.

By the way, the "Clear and Rebuild Programs Menu" does not clear out any of the bottles and games. What it does is go through the bottles and rebuild which programs have icons in Crossover Games' "Program Menu". So it has nothing to do with clearing out installed programs.

If you are trying to delete things you have installed, delete the bottles inside of Crossover Games, like in my last post to this forum. If you deleted the application without deleting the bottles, then you'll probably have to delete your Crossover Games folder in: ~/Library/ApplicationSupport

Ok nothing has worked thus far, so i did a search on my hard-drive for anything "CrossOver". Something came up that required a password from me but I don't know if I should be deleting it. It's the only thing I haven't deleted before. It was in

System -> opt -> local -> var -> macports -> sources -> rsync.macports.org -> release -> ports -> x-11 -> win-crossover-games ->

there was a folder and a file
the file was "Portfile" and the folder was "files" and in the folder was sl-audio.patch and win.in

I just want to make sure it's ok to delete these cause it's asking me for a password.

Joseph, don't delete that stuff in the "opt" folder at the base of your boot drive. That's not really related to CrossOver Games in the sense you think.

(CrossOver is built on an open source technology called Wine. In accordance with the license of Wine, we make the source code to our particular version of Wine available to download. Somebody has taken that source code and created a MacPorts port of it. That's what you're seeing there. It has the name "crossover" in it only to indicate that it's based on our version, but it doesn't interact with our CrossOver product in any way.)

You can try creating a new user account on your Mac, logging into that, and see if you can get GalCivII working there. If you can, you can then search that account for files and folders created by GalCivII and CrossOver -- they would basically be distinguishable by their creation or modification time -- and use that knowledge to clean up your main account.

Oh, how do I make a new user that is totally separate from the main one I use here?

In System Preferences, the Accounts pane, click the plus ('+') button. On that same pane, you can enable fast user switching in the Login Options, if you like.

Did all that, and the exact same error comes up, with the program having been installed, but then the first time i double click galciv2.exe, it asks me if I want to open CXG for the "first time". Then after that, all double-clicks just bring the manage bottles page to the forefront, without the game actually loading. I'll just have to wait on the CD copies coming in the mail and do what crispy did with the installation, I really hope it works, if not, I have no idea why CXG doesn't work on my macbook.

Why are you always double-clicking the .exe? First, have you tried the Run Command dialog? If so and it worked, have you tried its Save Command to Programs Menu button? After that, you should just use the item in the Programs menu or the launcher mini-application it creates in your programs folder (~/Applications/CrossOver, by default).

Finally, if you're going to be double-clicking .exe files, you need to designate a bottle as the default. See the Advanced tab of the Manage Bottles window.

YAY! Ken you're the best, all I designated the bottle as default and it works perfectlyyy!!

Wow, Ken, you ARE the best! Joseph, I'm really glad Ken was able to help you find the problem. I knew there had to be a solution in there somewhere, I just for the life of me couldn't imagine what it might have been.

Thanks for all the support here!

Joe
