What'd you do to get it to launch? I run it, and it tries to launch, flashes a window, then fails out quietly.
Unfortunately, the SD forums aren't allowing me to search them, at the moment, as I know there's some info hidden there about other folks' experiences with crossover. Alas, it's not supported by SD, and they've no plans to make a Mac version.
The Launcher app is what goes into the Start Menu for crossovers by default, however this will hang with the behavior you describe. You need to create a new shortcut to the actual game's .exe itself. At that point you can get it to run, but for me at least (Macbook Pro 2.5GHz, Geforce 8600GT, 2GB Ram, OSX 10.5.2) it will hang as soon as you start a single player game.
I'm using the Linux version of CrossOver Games and the game launches and looks fine.
I'm able to start a game, and it mostly plays well. But there are random crashes here and there. (I have it set to autosave after every turn, to minimize progress loss in the event of a crash.)
I find it interesting that it won't run on the Mac version, though.
EDIT: I'm using the original disc of GalCivII, not the Gold version or any expansion packs. Just in case those may be the cause of the problems.
Hmm. I've updated to OSX 10.5.3, as well as having tried cranking down the resolution: that appears to be the issue, at least in part. At the default res (1024x768) the game seems to start up okay - at my native res (1440x900) the game crashes when it tries to render the starfield.
At 1024x869, the fonts, however, are still pretty broken and I get significant pauses when selecting units (3-5 seconds per unit selection - makes it pretty much unplayable for me). Also, as you mentioned, frequent crashing is an issue.
I'm able to run it at 1280x1024. So it may be those odd or widescreen resolutions that mess it up.
Also, I'm not sure how frequent the crashes are on my end. They're certainly random, though. I can go over an hour without a crash on some occasions, and on others I can experience two crashes in a row. It mainly seems to occur when I'm selecting an object (ship, planet, starbase, etc.), bringing up a window, or while processing the next turn. It doesn't seem to happen when I select a destination for a ship, although I wouldn't rule that out.
When you mention the fonts being broken, are you talking about problems with line breaks? Because that makes some screens almost unreadable. I mean, I can play the game and get along just fine, but some of the information could be useful.
