Is there any reason the native version can't be used on this?

The native version is available for Mac at the web site and most Linux distros ship with packages available for the native version.

Is there any reason the Windows version needs to be used?

Here's the link to the download of all three versions, but I recommend using your distro's build if you use Linux, or a package ported specifically to your distro.
