Getting started

(Note: this may/will be edited to update as needed)

Welcome to Dawntrail!

tl;dr

Linux: Get a Windows (preferably not Steam) license, and use XIVLauncher
macOS: Get a macOS license, and use XIV on Mac

Licenses

If you are already playing, please note that FFXIV requires a separate license for the client and expansion for each platform that you are using: Steam, Windows, macOS, PlayStation, and/or Xbox Series X/S. It is not possible to have both Steam and Windows licenses on one account at this time.

Tech issues

The "New Layout Launcher" is known not to work under Crossover. You will need the official Mac client or one of the third party clients to log in.

The official Mac client/license is the most compatible. The game will recognize the License being used and make adjustments to the System Configuration screen. The presets will be renamed appropriately, and some specific, non-essential graphics options (which may not work properly anyway) will be hidden.

Already found an error. Tested the install, and the server detects a WINDOWS license under CX. Post edited to reflect this

Thanks for the link the the Open source linux launcher. That might help me get around my need to toggle off DXVK on relaunches will try tonight

Some bad news. I confirmed that under macOS the basic install into CX is unplayable. Character selection/creation works. At higher graphics quality presets, it crashes upon entering the world, and at lower presets significant graphics glitches are present. Need some feedback about Linux.

For now, it is not just recommendation: macOS users should purchase the macOS license and use XIV on Mac.

Edit: Issues addressed

Personal opinion time. :)

Although I have full confidence that Codeweavers will eventually address every issue in the future, the best immediate solution is to use XIVLauncher (Linux) or XIV on Mac (macOS)

Hi folks,

I'm obviously not able to provide details, but our relationship with Square Enix is ongoing, and the lack of a press release is not evidence that there will be no further updates to the macOS client.

Best,
Meredith

Thank you for the clarification. I know this project is in good hands.

An important update for players with Steam licenses:

Introducing Steam Version Account Linking

Steamageddon has happened. Lovely.

If you are running under macOS and are affected, the best option is to add the Mac licenses to your account. Other situations are currently unknown. Follow up with whichever group created the Launcher you are using.

Python issues are no longer relevant. Post removed to avoid confusion

The Tips here have been updated.

Please note that the options in the System Configuration panel change depending on the environment (OS, hardware, license). So, experiment a bit to fix those problems.

Update for July '22

The official macOS client has been bumped to v1.0.8 and is now working as expected. You will need to manually download the update, however: https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/mac/download/ Please note that, although the M1 (and M2) continue to be officially "Not supported", the game does run quite well on that hardware.

An issue has been identified where the game will not run on macOS hardware with 128 GB RAM. No known ETA on that one. Sorry! (Resolved 05-NOV-22)

Lastly, given that the official (and an unofficial) client are fully functional under macOS (which is what I use), I do not expect to maintain this C4 entry further. If any Linux users are feeling adventurous, have at it!

As of November 2022, the issue of XoM crashing with 128 GB has been resolved. Version 4.4.1 includes that fix.

As of August 2023... the client still uses the Windows license, but the in game graphics settings are now for macOS. Specifically, the presets are changed to Mac-specific settings, and items that are non-functional (HBAO+, Dynamic Resolution) are appropriately disabled/hidden.

Nope. A config file error on my end. Never mind!
