New Install failure

As a FFXIV veteran (Windows, Playstation), I decided to try both the Mac client and installing the Windows client under CX on my new MacBook Air M1. Unfortunately both failed.

The installation for both proceeds as expected. Eventually, I am shown a black window with the FFXIV logo drawn in white. ...and it just hangs there.

Is this a known issue, or otherwise currently expected to happen? Is there a work-around yet?

Hi Harry,

I don't think FFXIV is expected to work in CrossOver. As for the Mac client, I have gotten it to work fine on my machine, although Square Enix does not provide official support for it.

Best,
Meredith

I didn't expect to dive quite so deep so quickly. :D

In the bowels of WineHQ, I found some comments that might be a reasonable set of work-arounds. My interpretations:

  • the shiny new improved launcher does not (yet) work under WINE. So, setting Browser to 1, in FFXIV_BOOT.cfg will use the old one (if available) which should work.
  • The opening cut scene will not work. So, setting CutsceneMovieOpening to 1, in FFXIV.cfg will bypass that.

I'll have to check that out when I get home.

Taking one for the team....

Using the official Mac client and a new Free Trial account, I attempted to reinstall, and got the same result: black splash screen with white logo. I then edited the FFXIV_BOOT.cfg file, setting "Browser 1" (from Browser 2). The game properly launched the old style login screen (Heavensward art), and I logged in properly. Now, waiting two to three hours for the download to complete.

Well, that was stupid easy.

Once I set "Browser 1" in the Mac client, everything else went through without any issue. Logged in with my Free Trial account, first run cinematic, character creation, introductory quests... no problem.

I did find a link in the launcher: https://support.na.square-enix.com/faqarticle.php?id=5382&la=1&kid=67598&ret=faq ...which specifically states "The Mac version is not compatible with the latest launcher theme. Currently, the launcher will only open in its old theme for the Mac version." There you go.

With regards to CX, after the install of a couple hundred dependencies, the first run of the launcher/patcher generated "An unknown error occurred in register_dlls" message. I clicked Skip and let the process finish. I started the Launcher, it apparently fixed the error and I got to the old theme login window. (Apparently, I left a .cfg file behind with the Browser 1 setting). I logged in with my windows-licensed account and am now facing four hours worth of download/patch for Shadowbringers

Overall, other than one-time oddities, everything works as expected. The only issue I found is that I cannot use the Tab key to move from the Username box to the Password box. I can live with that. :)

That was a bit of a waste of time. Oh, well

After the massive download, and some buttons not being drawn, the game (CX bottle) crashes upon launch. :( Hopefully, it's just some configuration issue that I know nothing about.

Are you guys having problems with the Mac client or the windows client in CX? I haven't tried it on crossover, but I played it for several months with the official client earlier this year on my m1 air. It worked flawlessly then.

Mac client is golden. No problems. (other than the "Browser 1" tweak, and it not recognizing the PS4 dualshock touchpad)

It's the windows client in CX that's giving me fits now. I'm gonna screw around with the bottle and stuff this weekend. Do you have any suggestions?

Specifically, no unfortunately. I have an apple license for FFXIV so I've never tried to use crossover for it. I would recommend as a general tip to make sure to google for the proton db as well as winehq to look to see if they have any tips and or parameters you can try.

Don’t want to give false hope, but

New Win 8, 64 bit bottle
DirectX End User (accept the error and continue)
IE 11 for Win8, 64 bit (manual install)
FFXIV

Launcher/patcher behaving as expected. Proper branding for expansion displayed for download meter. Waiting on four hours of download now.

edit

Big nope. First run (with no FFXIV_BOOT.cfg file available) installs, reports DX 9.0c software being used, and hands off to the game, which crashes. Additional ones (FFXIV_BOOT present) have the upper right corner of the launcher (username/password area) crash with some javascript-related message when any interactive item is clicked.

Hey!

I know this was talking about Mac Crossover but I was able to get FFXIV to work using Linux Crossover. Hopefully this can help others.

Steps:

  1. Installed Steam through the Crossover GUI and let Crossover make its own bottle for it. (I own the Steam Version of FFXIV. I had problems creating a bottle in Crossover and installing Steam in it).

  2. Download FFXIV, set the launcher to the original launch (Browser 1) in FFXIV_BOOT.cfg. Also set the cutscene setting (CutsceneMovieOpening 1).

  3. Enabled Direct X11 for the client. Wait for the launch to finish downloading

  4. After the game is downloaded and BEFORE you launch the game i go into Crossover GUI, right click the steam bottle, settings, and enable "DXVK Vulkan backend for D3D11 (builtin). I have to disable this setting to get the launch to launch but I have to turn it on to load the game.

  5. The game launches and loads into my character.

Note: I did not have to install any Winetricks for this to work.

Unfortunately, I am still getting what seems to be a javascript-related error inside the launcher. Haven't even started to poke around graphics drivers.

The only "gotta have it" things I've seen so far are a Win7 64bit bottle and DXVK. Everything else I'm throwing randomly into the bottle. LOL
