State of the MacOS Catalina client

Im curious if anyone from the dev team can comment on the state of the 64bit Mac client. Currently a large subsection of Mac users are out of luck when running the game due to some tricky bits with Catalina, Direct X 11 translations, and 32bit sub programs (of which Catalina will not support at all.) Anything not running a AMD graphics chip is incapable ATM. Sad, considering that over 80% of Macs run an Intel graphics chip, most being better than the minimum requirement if your MacBook is post 2013.

Right now the official statements are to downgrade to MacOS Mojave in order to play.

Square Enix already has an official MacOS client.

However, it isn’t a true native client. It is the windows executable inside (what used to be) TransGaming’s Cider wrapper, which is a fork of Wine. As far as I know, it is still running at barely acceptable performance levels. (Oops! Didn’t know Codeweavers officially took over from Transgaming)

It should be noted that if you are already playing on one platform, you need to repurchase the client and expansion for the other platforms. In other words, you’ll need to buy up to $60 USD of duplicate licenses. The monthly fee is unaffected.

I would suggest staying with the console version (if you have it) or dual boot into Windows. If you cannot live without it running under MacOS, the official Squeenix client is the way to go.

(Disclosure: I have not used the official Mac client, nor do I know what the current status of the Cider fork is)

post script: consider the system requirements as of June 2019. Is your Mac better than this

  • OS
    macOS Mojave 10.14.3
  • Applicable model
    iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late2014) or higher
  • Memory
    4GB
  • Free Disk Space
    60GB
  • Graphics
    AMD Radeon™ R9 M295X or higher
  • Recommended Screen Resolution
    1600x900

Wow. do i feel like an idiot now. 😭

I was unaware that Codeweavers took over the official FFXIV client, as of Shadowbringers.

Allow me to rewrite my previous comments.

Now officially under Codeweavers, I have faith that they will make the best possible adjustments to their wine wrapper to get official FFXIV MacOS client running well.

If you are trying to run the windows client in a separate install of CX, there may be a delay in having the app-specific wine tweaks brought into the general CX client. Be patient.

As far as not supporting Intel graphics, that’s out of CW’s hands. The windows client requires “Geforce® GTX750 or higher or AMD Radeon™ R7 260X or higher”. Mac client requires “AMD Radeon™ R9 M295X or higher”. You’d have to talk to Squeenix to get them to start coding for Intel chips on their windows client.

As far as 32 bit support and DX9 is concerned, again, that’s Squeenix. They decided to drop support in the Windows EXE for those.
