I tried and the installer crashes right away.
Did you follow "Getting It To Work" on Tips & Tricks? If you get a message like "Unable to complete version check. [#] [#]" then following that will most likely be your solution.
I can even get the client to install and start downloading the game. I think I need to copy it over from a virtual machine.
Is this where you got the installer? Because it works perfectly fine for me when using a fresh bottle in CX 14.1.0..
Can you give some verbose output info so we have more to go by?
I would say try the following:
Step 2 - Created a Bottle of windows XP by installing the software, but cancelled out of the software install to create the bottle. The software wanted to install directx 9. (Success)
Step 3 - Used Winetricks in the terminal - WINEPREFIX=~/.cxoffice/winxp winetricks (Success)
Step 4 - Installed the following DLL and Components - d3dx9 devenum ie8 quartz wininet winhttp xact_jun2010 wmp10 (Success)
Step 5 - Installed FFXIV to the winxp bottle using Crossover (Success)
Step 6 - Tried to run the game and it would not allow me to click on next for the User Agreement.
This gave me an error has occured in the script on this page. HTML Parsing Error: Unable to modify the parent container element before the child element is closed (KB927917) (Failed, but went on to fix this issue with the next Step.)
Step 7 - Opened the FFXIV_BOOT.cfg in the text editor and modified the EulaAgreement and B4EulaAgreement from 0 to 1 and saved the document. (Success)
Step 8 - The launcher loaded up and I got the login screen. I put in the login information and it would not allow me to update. Gave me an error of: Unable to complete version check. [30410][30607][10009][19900][12017] with an OK button. (Failed, but went onto the next step as I have a dual boot system with windows.)
Step 9 - Copied over the FFXIV files from the program files into the crossover C drive for FFXIV. (Success)
Step 10 - I get the Play button and when I click on it and it finally played. I am guessing it is because of my video drivers. (Success)
Step 11 - I copied over the settings from my windows copy except for the display settings. I did not want to copy over the full screen mode just yet. Figured I could set that in the game if i feel brave enough at this point. (Success)
Step 12 - Logged into the game and it does work, I checked these settings and they were already setup from my windows version - "Within the game's graphic settings, enable "Enable HDR rendering and improved overall graphics quality." and disable "Disable rendering of objects when not visible. (Occlusion Culling)" to reduce these undesirable effects." (Success)
Step 13 - Very bad frame rate 10-11 and graphic problems for my AMD card. I also have these setup correctly too.
wininet native,builtin
urlmon native,builtin
winhttp native,builtin
I did not have dinput native, not sure if this would really help at all.
Is anybody closer to getting this program to work automatically? Someone suggested that I would like FF14, but I'm running into the usual "Unable to complete version check" error.
I did download the install program from the suggested address:

I think instructions might need to be a little more explicit on the "Tips & Tricks". I installed winetricks (sudo apt-get install winetricks) then I typed the given text (WINEPREFIX=/virt/cxoffice/SquareEnix.WinXP winetricks d3dx9 devenum ie8 quartz wininet winhttp xact_jun2010 wmp10), but it just tells me "wineserver not found!"
I did manage to edit the XP bottle's Wine Configuration / Libraries for the 3 suggested settings.
But still no love.
