Hi all,

I can finally install the JP version of FF11 and running in my macbook pro now. CX games is really a great software. But now I have some little issue about input method. When I swich to use Japanese Input Method in Mac, all the characters I inputted in FF11 displayed as question marks. Is it a problem of missing some fonts or locale problem? I have tried switching Mac OS locale into Japanese and the result was still the same. Do you guys have any hints on this issue?

Can you see Japanese in shouts in Whitegate / Jeuno or are those question marks there too?

The problem is probably due to missing or incomplete fonts. Try installing the Core Fonts package. (You probably have to un-hide service packs and dependencies on the Installer Assistant tab of CrossOver's preferences.)

I know it sounds like a font problem but it isn't. The reason being, Final Fantasy does not use system fonts which is why people without Japanese fonts installed can still see the kanji, the font is in the game files.

Remember, not only does IME need to be installed and set to "JP" but the setting for non-unicode needs to be set to Japanese as well, the same as a Japanese PC is set by default. I ran into this problem once as well and that was the fix, which is also the official fix for what you are describing.

I am not sure how to set this in Crossover, I will leave that up to you Ken. We should also consider using applocale that would save you settingsand not change slashes in directories to yen symbols which could cause issues too. Getting the game to be launched by applicale could be a pain like loading windower is(I still have yet to get that to work)

I'd just like to mention that I use a Japanese Mac OS and a Japanese version of the game and the Japanese characters have never been an issue
for me except for the fact that I can't type in the ¥ (yen) mark. I have done nothing more than the installation methods described in thread:

I do, however, run a 7.2.0 beta version of Crossover and have only recently been able to get in to FFXI. I still get a white screen in POL on 7.1.1.

I wonder if the question marks that Jason is getting is a two byte question mark or a one byte one?

Just needed to see if there was an update to this. I have JP FFXI installed but it won't let me type in Japanese at all (the same as if IME was off.) Kotoeri of course works fine in OSX so I am not sure what I need to set in WINE config.

In System Preferences's Language & Text pane (formerly International), if you choose Japanese (for Language) and Japan (for Region on the Formats tab) before launching FFXI, does it work any better?

Any time I use Format > Japanese I get a black box where the game should be as soon as I hit accept, this is the first time the game starts using any 3D. POL seems to accept Japanese input no matter which settings I use.

The game always needed IME installed and non-unicode settings set to Japanese, without IME it would not switch languages obviously and without non-unicode it would show question marks when you type Japanese (other people's would show up fine.)
