Just because some players will be interested to know how FFXI performs on M1 Macs using Crossover, I had a cursory attempt to see how it performs. I spent around 3 hours tinkering and trying to get it to work well on my MacBook Air and the below details what I found.
Sadly, the news isn't good. The game works mostly fine (there are the usual issues that you can read about in this very forum but those are not insurmountable and the game can get up and running) but the performance is poor.
The first thing I noticed when I finally started the game is the long transition screens which don't occur on Windows, even on weaker computers.
I'd last logged out in my Mog House, which really doesn't have a lot of furniture in it.. and the framerate is terrible - around 3fps.
At this time, my MacBook Air CPU runs at 100%+ all the time according to Activity Monitor.
Framerate in Bastok, which was quiet in terms of player counts, was better than my Mog House but still <30fps probably around the 15fps mark.
GPU usage is around 55-60% in Bastok
(Is there any chance of a native M1 version of Crossover?)
There appears to be some graphical corruption in the Mog House on the default window? This isn't seen on other platforms but this is a minor complaint.
Framerate is so bad on Apple M1 that it's actually difficult to logout in my Mog House because it's difficult to type /shutdown, I found the menus worked better than keyboard input.
In general, the game definitely works. I wouldn't say it's playable for any serious content right now but if you need to log and chat or just check the auction house, it might be serviceable? It certainly wasn't in my Mog House but oddly Bastok performed better.
