As it is with many of the older games I have lying around, SDOE installs fine from both the original CD and from the various upgrade/installer ZIPs on the internet. It never really crashes: it launches fine and takes over the screen, and if you listen to the sounds it is evident that the menus are working fine (as well as the "menu music", snippets of old radio programs), but the screen does not update and remains black. I'm only guessing, but this is almost certainly due to the same WINE problem that causes many older games to have the same behavior, and thus deserves a re-test with the new thread-safe WINE libs when they become available in CX.
