launch, but doesnt start

The game would work perfectly, because its the same engine as fallout 3. But there is a problem to start the game. Launcher works, you can change settings but if you start the game this error appears: "Failed to initialize renderer. Unknown error creating the Gamebryo Renderer.".
This game also doesn't start under latest wine. There is a workaround in wine, but you need a git installation. No idea how to apply the patches under crossover...http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=21692&iTestingId=57981

You can't. The version of wine used in CXgames is precompiled. Will just have to wait till a work around is found or till crossover is updated...

Actually, you can apply patches like these to Crossover via way of a precompiled
module copied into the CX installation tree...it's just a non-trivial operation
and one needs to know what they are doing, and it -might- taint your pristine
CX install (well, it will taint it anyway...whether it breaks anything else is
something one would need test). I don't have this title, so I can't test it
myself...I can do the compiling bit tho' if anyone's interested...

Cheers!

Well, since it is essential to run this game I certainly would be interested as it's a bit beyond my knowledge and know how and I don't have windows installed, I have purchased this game and haven't even had a chance to play it. Actually been tempted to create a new partition for this game, but I was just trying to be patient.
Also could you point me in the direction for some documentation on how to do this?
Thanks a bunch Don.

So to sum it up, please do a compile.

Hi,

"Windows?..we don't need no sticking windows!!" said Cheech...

Patching, in itself, is easy enough...see;

http://www.hotbot.com/?query=patching+wine&ps=&loc=searchbox&tab=web&mode=search&currProv=msn

The possible ramifications of applying a patch, and/or the integration of a
patch itself into a different build tree (and whether or not that's appropriate
or will even work) is another matter ; I'll have a look at the patch over this
coming weekend and see if it's feasible to include in the base wine tree on which
CXG-9.2 derived ... more later....

Cheers!

Hi,

The patched d3d9 winelib for linux you can grab from...;

http://rapidshare.com/files/428218354/FNV_d3d9.tar.gz

James has already given it a shot and reports it seems sane.
There's a readme in the archive to help with using it. This
is for linux only and good for CXG-9.2 -- if you're using OSX
this won't work, I would need compile another for the Mac...so
if interested, ask...

Cheers!

Would this to work on OSX, any hints or links to where I should start would be greatly appreciated! :)

Hi,

As I allude to above, the same procedure will work with OSX, but obviously
the code must be compiled on OSX (or else employ cross-compiling) to arrive
at a winelib that will work....

...the link I provided above regarding patching wine is just as applicable
to OSX as it is to linux (or anything else that can compile/run wine) -- you
will of course need to first provide/install a working GNU toolchain for OSX
to use for the compilation process, which is tantamount to doing the following ;

http://wiki.winehq.org/MacOSX/Building

I use the macports approach myself...

Cheers!

Thanks Don,

That seems way beyond my ability unfortunately, I may have to install a bootcamp partition to get this game running afterall!

Thanks anyway! :)

Hi Don,

I tried to patch it again when I got home tonight, still no luck! Was wondering, if it wasn't too time consuming, if you could post a OSX version of your linux patch?

It would be HUGELY appreciated!

Lee

Hi,

...I'll spool up an OSX version of same sometime today...

Cheers!

I too am in need of an OSX patch.

I've got CX games 9.1 OSX. Will the patch function for that version?

I am unable to download 9.2 since my subscription is done ...

Hi,

No idea if it'll work in 9.1, and I don't have the source tree
handy for that version to check -- I've already emailed Lee with the
OSX build of the winelib to test, so if it works as expected I'll
be hoisting it to rapidshare as well...you'll be able to grab it and
check yourself then against CXG-9.1...

Cheers!

Works like a charm. Epic work Don. The game itself runs comparable to Fallout3, no surprise its the same engine. Will test the next days if your patch works also with other working games (steam,etc...). Will write here if there is s.th. wrong

Big job, thank you very much for your effort

EDIT: Well the game runs smoothly, but it crashes randomly. Installed the game in the same bottle as fallout 3. It crashes most if you open a door or activate pipboy...
Steam games runs exactly good as before, so the patch don't harm other games.
Any idea why the vegas crashes apparently?

Hi Don,

The patch seems to work, the game is actually loading now, I am encountering another problem that seems to be unrelated, I can't get past the Bethesda logo at the beginning of the game. I will do a bit of digging around to see if I can come up with something.

Thanks for your patch!

Lee

Scratch my last, just VNC'd into my home machine from work to try out the game again, seems to load all the way into the game now, will test further later on tonight - again huge thanks to Don!

Hi again,

Thanks to James & Lee for testing against the game itself ;)

Also note (for the record) that it's not "my" patch - it's the patch
mentioned at the beginning here, wrt the thread from wineHQ ... I'm just
handy with a compiler and know a bit about this sort of stuff - the real
kudos go to Austin E. & Andrew N. - http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24831 8)

Anyhow hoopy_froods, here's the OSX build of the same thing for your delectation;

http://rapidshare.com/files/428505442/d3d9_osx.tar.gz

Once again, there's a readme.txt in the archive to help you install it.

@Paul -- I think it should work with 9.1 afaict

Cheers!

One last thing to mention guys. Even though the game is running thats not saying it perfect so far. There are still a few foibles to contend with. I have not had any crashes as of yet (running linux Ubuntu) but I have had some odd sound issues and looping in the game. The best and only way around it so far I have found is to just save it and restart. So as said, there are still issues and they could be very numerous. Best of luck.

Thanks for the patch Don, however after following the readme and running FNV again, it throws a vague error at me.

"The program FalloutNV.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

Then it tells me it may be caused by a deficiency in wine, etc. Could this be due to the patch being made from 9.2, while I'm running 9.1 CXG?

Hi,

No idea really...I don't have this game, so I've no way of knowing.
It could be the patch, it could easily be the 9.1 build too ..ie; the
patch isn't the problem, some other part of the 9.1 build is..

Cheers!

Make it work, i want it to work so bad. Please!!!!

an god bless yall that are trying

Hi,

Seeing as the more correct patch is in wine-1.3.6, my guess is the -next-
release of Crossover Games will include that....someone -should- test the
game against wine-1.3.6 to find out whether it's fixed or not there. If it
is fixed in that version, it'd be handy to know....I suppose I could hoist
a bug on this, and at least note the fact that the patch used here does go
towards addressing the issue....

...has anyone submitted a ticket on this yet? (I'd attach them to the bug
if they already exist)..tell me the ticket number if so...do -not- create
any new tickets on this....

Cheers!

Game starts and runs with patch when windowed mode is off!

THANK YOU DON!!!

I have tried it with 1.3.6. I actually ran into an error with it, but I haven't tested it fully. It was the wine incompatibility one but many others have had it working fine.

Hi James,

Cool...keep us posted. I'll hoist a bug on it in a moment,
just so it's 'on the radar' so to speak - thanks for the
feedback...

Cheers!

Hi,

Apols, I missed this...edits often slip by, new posts work best recognition wise ;)

No, no idea about the sporadic crashing...you'd probably have to try catch a debug
trace of the actual event to understand the why of it...

Cheers!

From what i've heard this might be just because Fallout New Vegas is buggy. There were two updates issued just recently that attempt to fix it. FYI the second update contains all of the first one as well, so no need to do both.

This is true. Just like with Fallout 3, New Vegas is a tab buggy and there are a couple engine issues. It's a shame that these bugs can't get worked out before the games are released. Alas, this is where we are, trying to get a buggy game to work for an incompatible OS that is trying to emulate a different buggy OS. At least we don't get the blue screens of death :D

I am able to get the game to the start screen, but the mouse is unusable. This is on an i7 iMac with 9.2. The game runs fine what little I could do, but the mouse constantly points down. I was able to set my character up but when told to walk across the room, was able to do so only by looking at my feet!

I use ControllerMate to program my Cyborg R.A.T. 7 mouse, so I was hoping that the helper program that CM uses was the problem, so I disabled it completely, and still no go.

Seems I am having different troubles then the rest with the game, as I am able to run it with no patch, just not able to USE it because of the funny mouse!

This happened to me with another game (Pound of Ground), and I am beginning to wonder if it's something wrong with my configuration that I am unable to change, or know how to change? I have also not applied the patch mentioned in this thread, I assume it doesn't have anything to do with the mouse...

Hi,

"Sterling Peoples" - just to kill off your paranoia I can confirm having the same mouse issue with Fallout New Vegas and the Update3 patch applied (Fallout being 1.2.something). No special mice or controllers on my setup (MBP17)

If you use the Steam version then you get automatically the newest version of the game. If you try it out with a vanilla DVD version without updating the game in Steam you should be able to run the game with mouse working properly. But as noted, the vanilla version is buggy as playing "outside world" will crash the game after couple of minutes.

One note though. As CX Games is based on Wine 1.2.x tree I used playonmac.com GUI and their package of wine with 1.3.7. As it has the fallout new vegas script ready it made it easy to install it. It gives better chances of success in playing new vegas on mac until CX upgrades to the wine 1.3.x branch.

Cheers!

for some reason i get error5:0000065434 what does this mean?

Hi,

Not sure, but, it would appear to be some Steam issue?...see;
