The base game installation is very easy with the Fallout 4 crosstie, so use that to start.
After that, I recommended a bunch of utilities like BethINI to set the settings and bug fixes mods to be installed along side the game, using Mod Organizer 2 and F4SE.

PSA here as well, disable gore. If you don't disable gore you'll get crashes. I couldn't get past Concord until I disabled it. I kept getting crashes with the power armor section of Concord.
Most of what is mentioned here works in the GOG.com version of Fallout 4 through accessing the file in Documents/My Games/Fallout 4/fallout.ini.
I'm going to be including screenshots on the tip, but here they are. Go under the Heading of [Controls] and add the line of "bBackgroundMouse=1" (Without Quotes), then go under the heading of [General] and add "bDisableAllGore=1" (Without Quotes)
Thank you peaz for getting notes out on the Steam Version, since I mainly only use the GOG version.
