Gamers First/ Free to Play install - has anyone tried it?

I originally played Fallen Earth during the closed and open beta stages but haven't played in over a year. Looking at the free to play "first look" videos popping up on You Tube has made me want to revisit this corner of the apocalypse.

Over the next week I'll be installing the game using the windows game install client. Hopefully in the end I will have a working guide to install from scratch.

Anyone else tried to install since the transition to Free to Play?

So far so good

Start with a Windows XP Bottle and add the following:
Internet Explorer 7
Core Fonts
Windows Media Player 9
DirectX 9

Then install Fallen Earth installer and log in.

I am patching the game now - I'll update again after the patching is complete.

Patching took a long time. I let the process run overnight and it was still not complete in the morning.

Once the patch was complete I was able to login and create a character. I started the tutorial and played for almost 30 minutes without a single issue. The game runs slow on my machine but I do not have a very powerful MacBook. Turning down the graphics to low and turning off advanced FX gets the game in a playable state.

I have yet to find anything that does not work in the game.

The Wine mail list has an entry for Fallen Earth that reports that the game plays well on Linux but mouse look does not work out of combat. I do not have this problem using Crossover on Mac. If someone on Linux could try and see if the mouse look is working I think we can list the game as Gold.

Hi,

...I'll likely get to this over the weekend and have a look,
create crosstie...blabla. Mind you, even if it works (without the
mousing issue) in linux, it's presumptuous to forecast a gold
ranking without a decent amount of gameplay under your belt..ie;
it has happened before wherein a gold ranking turns to mud, when
you subsequently discover a certain level doesn't load etc..etc..

Cheers!

I am several hours in and I have yet to see anything that doesn't work.

The patch screen checks for file corruption every login but I don't know if that is normal behaviour or if it is specific to running through CrossOver.

,,yeah, I noticed that ... it may need XML 4.0 installed into the
same bottle ; once I did that, the patcher seemed happy and declared
'no updates required' ...

...I did a crosstie up for this (as you see), but it was giving the
Ninjas some trouble ...and I'm not entirely sure what's going wrong.
I might be the fact it's based on the full installer download (5.5gb)
or that CXG is trying to launch the installer because the download gets
interrupted (network/download server glitch) ..but I don't have the
bandwidth right now to investigate it further -- if you manually download
the full installer, the crosstie works fine & patching is much quicker...

...I'll recheck things when I've got the bandwidth to do so...

I have been playing the mac beta version of FE (downloaded from the FE site) for over a month and cannot get FPS higher than 20. I have tried lowering resolution, choosing optimal settings, playing in windowed mode etc and nothing works. The game is playable but when you get to Sector 2 towns the FPS is even worse, at this point unplayable for me. Very frustrating. I am on a macbook pro 15", 2.53 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 gb, Nvidia GEforce 9400. According to players in game the Intel Core is the problem. If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

Thanks

The version available from the Fallen Earth site is a wine wrapper that is considerably old. I believe it was originally created when the game was in open beta. While the wrapper works I do not how it works or how to "tune" it. If you look on the Fallen earth Forums you can find a newer wrapper for the Fallen Earth client.

I play on my laptop and using Crossover and I can get 30+ frames per second (except in Embry) on a regular basis. I tone down the graphics to give my poor little MacBook a break.
