Everquest via Steam on Crossover

Hi all,

Im currently running the trial of crossover looking to purchase if i can get EQ to work, I have a Mac Book Pro running OSX 10.7, i am running the trial crossover which i downloaded yesterday and i am running the latest steam client for windows.

Basically i installed crossover with no issues whatsoever, then installed steam inside a bottle by selecting the msi file, creating a bottle and selecting unsupported application. Steam would not let me purchase the gaeme due to a HTTP error when trying to purchase so i did this on my windows bootcamp then switched back to OSX, launched crossover and started my EQ purchase downloading on steam. (Seeds of Destruction) the game downloaded and appeared to patch successfully but when i try to launch it crashes with a fatal error.

Any idea's as i really want to get this working on OSX instead of having to scrap crossover and install on bootcamp

Stuart 😕

Download http://www.angeliqe.com/d3dx9_30.dll and place that file inside your EverQuest directory, then try to start the game again.

(the EverQuest directory being the directory that contains "eqgame.exe" and "EverQuest.exe")

thanks for your quick reply as you suggested i downloaded tht file and placed it into the directory where eqgame.exe resides which is /Users/Username/Library/Application Support/Crossover/Bottes/Steam/Drive_c/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/everquest, when i double click the exe in finder nothing launches? Crossover is running in the background. Also when i open steam and try to playgame from steam i get the same error - The program Launchpad.exe ha encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for any inconvinience - This anbe caused by aproblem in the program or deficiency in Wine. You may want to check http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/ for tips about running this application

Do you have any more ideas?

May'be if i download and install the appliation via steam in bootcamp then on osx crossover create a new bottle and place all the installation directory inside it along with the .dll, however i cannot se this making a difference.

It probably won't. If it is the launchpad that is crashing, you may want to make sure that you have the crossover HTML engine installed, though I thought that was default. I can't provide any Mac-specific info, as I'm on Linux, not Mac.

Here launchpad runs without problems, and without any specific fixes. I've never launched from within steam, though I can see that making any difference.

Did you try following step 5+6 from the tips and tricks article "Getting EverQuest up and running on an Intel Mac"? :

5) In Crossover, go to Programs -> Run Command and choose
EverQuest.exe from the EQ directory inside the bottle.
6) Select "Save Command to Programs Menu" and it will be available
in the Programs menu from then on.

Strangley i dont have everquest.exe in the eq directory only eqgame.exe. ive followed those steps using eqgame.exe and it comes with a message please run everquest.exe 😭

Ok, this is a very long shot, but you could try to download EQ and install it outside of steam (you can still use the account that you got from buying it off of steam): http://escapetonorrath.station.sony.com/download.vm

Other than that, I think I'm out of ideas.

Ok will try that. Thanks for your time i really appriciate the tips 😊 , last quick question, Obvs Escape from norrath is not as recent as SOD can i update ingame to SOD as my friends will be playing SOD and i would like to be able to visit the same places as them 😊

The way EQ works is that the patcher always patches to the latest version available. So even if your account is not flagged for the latest expansion (currently Underfoot) you will still have that one installed. So Escape to Norrath will patch EQ to include all current expansions, including SOD, so you'll be able to visit all zones that your account is flagged for :)

i've never heard of "steam" so i'd be inclined to do it old school, download the Norrath demo and install it. when you put in a proper Sony account it will recognize that you don't have everything you're eligible for and start downloading it. in my case it actually made a second folder and installed EQ into that one.

from my side, Crossover Games works great. i've been playing EQ on it on my Mac for a few years now. there's been the odd hiccup but nothing major that i couldn't resolve either on my own or with the help of others in these forums. do keep in mind that EQ isn't the most stable app out there.

once you've got your app installed you'll likely experience a few other hiccups, like when the system switches from one screen to the next. this is usually because each time it does this it requires new resources, like Dirext X and such. go through each one step at a time. we've all been where you are lol there's awesome resources in here on this stuff.

to reiterate, go old school. sign up on Sony's site and download the files from them then refer back to these forums for loads of juicy help.

oh, you are using Crossover Games and not normal Crossover right? on my first attempt i installed normal Crossover. for playing EQ, it didn't work so well hehe.

😉

Update

Right... Thanks guys for your excellent advise i am 95% there now! :)

I did install the wrong crossover (how embarrassing)

I installed the norrath as suggested then let it patch and update which took hours, Everything works perfect..except - When in tutorial or training i seem to be missing most of the characters graphics, In gloomingdeep i can see everyone but flutterwings, the kobolt banker and all the enemy's, and in my hometown i can only see the 'cat' looking ones (sorry i dont know what there called) i can play the game fine and interact with these characters, but cannot see them, Also my sword i am carrying seems to glitch and become 20ft long

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

I have tried setting res to the lowest and switched all the settings also to there lowest, all characters are switched on

i think the last time i was struck with the missing models the solution was to do a thorough scan. i know, i know, but you just installed everything fresh. that may be but it doesn't mean that it went as smooth as it reported to you. give it a shot or two, you might be surprised.

other than that, i think there might be other posts in here that will assist. this place is a GREAT resource!

I switched off the pixel shaders (4 of them i think) and that resolved most of the issue's i still get the odd glitch but i can live with that. I will keep trying the scans.

Thanks again guys for your help 😀

Now to get out the old plastic and pay for crossover 😥

ah! that's ringing a bell now. i messed with many of the settings and found that i could turn off the pixel shaders all together and relied on the "Advanced Shader" to handle it all and it was BAM!!! i actually saw grass and rows in the ground at the farm in DSH. i never even knew they were there until then.

maybe that's another option 😉
