Hi, I'm trying to run the latest Everquest client (live servers, not test or emu) on Ubuntu 14.04 using CrossOver Linux 15.0.1. I'm using a Core i7 quad core processor with hyperthreading and 16 GB of RAM. This computer dual boots into Windows 7 and in Windows I can run 6 accounts without even noticing a performance dip.
When I try to run it on Linux the game installs and runs fine, but as soon as it enters the game from the Launchpad (I.e., when you get to the server select screen) it instantly causes one of my CPU cores to go to 100%. It then takes about 5 minutes to get to the character select screen, another 2-3 minutes to get into the game, and then each zone takes about 3 minutes. The CPU core stays at 100% until I exit the game.
I've tried two different flavors of Ubuntu 14.04--the official 64 bit version from Ubuntu and then Gnome Ubuntu (I can't stand Unity). I've also tried installing Everquest into a Windows XP bottle and a Windows 7 bottle. Finally, I turned all of the graphics off or as low as they could go. Clip plane was set to near, spell particles were turned off, advanced vertex shaders disabled, etc etc. If you play EQ you know what I'm talking about. I turned them off through the in game options and then through eqclient.ini. I also tried setting the CPU affinity to different cores through eqclient.ini. None of that made a difference, one of the CPU cores goes to 100% as soon as the game loads.
Has anyone had this problem before? If so, did you find a fix?
