Has anyone gotten this to work since it went free 2 play?

the eqmac is still up and running, but being stuck in pop leaves much to be desired. wondering if anyones updated with the f2p model last night. ive been trying to get er working, have it completely patched, then it crashs on a black screen when i press play. Running a brand new bottle, the .exe from eqplayers, the replaced dl.

As i dont have windows, not sure where to pickup a later version of d3dx9 ☹️

thats the same error i've gotten all morning. and far as the dl file goes, i googled it, downloaded it from a thread someone else made about everquest :P

Ok, so i got er working just fine. heres what i did.

downloaded the latest trial of crossover. created a fresh new windows-xp bottle.

heres the installed list of programs in the bottletop to bottom. i started by installing microsoft visual c++ 10 redistributeable. then direct x9. i installed the eq.exe last. those were the only 3 i installed, the rest came with it.

crossover html engine
eve online (i have no clue why or how this ended up in there)
everquest
internet explorer 7
microsoft.net framework 2.0
microsoft directx runtime modern
microsoft html rendering engine 7
microsoft visual c++ 2010 redist
microsoft xml parser (msxml) 3.0
microsoft xmllite for windows xp
msls31

i ran the everquest.exe file provided from everquest.com's play free button via the website. allowed it to patch fully, pressed play. was taken to the server list. had to cmd+m to be able to use the mouse pointer, and everything after that went perfefctly. i did not copy any dl file, use and cd instalation discs, etc. just downloaded the simple file.

i hope this helps

I can confirm loading all those does get it mostly working. Performance is good, some of the mobs do not show up (rats, bats, etc), others look fine (wolves, snakes, etc). Observed a crash in eqgraphicsdx9, does it every time on exiting the game, other than that seems stable.

-d

Looks like the latest update (OS X 10.8.2 and Crossover 11.2.2 (11.2.2.26246)) breaks EQ again.

I got it working perfectly fine with Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and crossover 11.3.0. You need to install the following:

Microsoft Visual C++ 10 Redistributable
Direct X9
Core Fonts

That is all I did and then I installed using the free to play launchpad downloaded straight from the Everquest site. I was able to patch, connect to a server, create a character, and login and play. I will update this post and my rating if anything changes.

Thank you! This worked fine for me on a 27" iMac (AMD Radeon 6770M 512MB) running Mountain Lion (10.8.2) also, in Crossover 11.3.0. I was trying with Vista bottles last week and not having any success (the patcher crashed every time), but by creating an XP bottle and installing the packages you mentioned, it works beautifully. So thumbs up, EQ is still alive in Crossover!

Granted, I have not yet ran around and actually played any, but everything seems to work fine in the guild hall... knock on wood. Will try some actual playing when I get a chance and let you know (and give my rating).

The only issue I have so far is that my right shift key for some reason is not recognized by EQ as the same as left shift, it is working for some things (shift-related EQ shortcuts) but not for actual typing (such as accessing capital characters or alternate characters). Left shift however works fine for this. Going to try with a Windows keyboard when I get a chance and see if that makes a difference...

Ok, a brief update to my previous post - with the setup described above, EverQuest crashes every time I look at the center crystal in Shard's Landing in the Rain of Fear expansion no matter what graphics settings I try. Everything and everywhere else seems fine so far however. Right shift not working is very annoying when you're used to using it a lot but it does not actually hinder gameplay that much.

Will try it with Crossover 12 sometime soon and see if that helps with the crashing, but for now it is definitely at the very least a Silver.

Update: Not sure if it was Crossover 12 or patches in EQ itself that did it, but no more crashing in Shard's Landing (Crossover 12.0).
So in my experience lately EQ works just fine - which is awesome!

The right shift thing is still there, but I believe that may be an issue with Apple keyboards - I will try plugging in a PC keyboard sometime.

Just to provide an update, I have played (and raided!) a lot in Rain of Fear now, both on an iMac (2010 or 2011 model, don't remember offhand and don't have the machine here) and on a Macbook Air (2012) with absolutely no issues other than the right shift thing which is really not a big bother.

That seems to simply be related to how keyboards are interpreted though, as it makes no difference which keyboard is used, whether internal or external, Apple or non-Apple, the keys are just interpreted strangely in EQ it seems (the right shift key is simply not acknowledged as existing, I tried fiddling with the registry in the bottle to no avail - it seemed to make the changes, but it made no difference to EverQuest.

On a side note, I am very impressed by the fact that the Macbook Air with its Intel 4000 integrated graphics runs EQ this smoothly, it loads incredibly fast thanks to the SSD and while it will often run the fans from the strain they are not very noisy.

I get the same exception as Colin, except that it only happens when quitting back from Character Select to Server Select. Apart from that, no problems; I would count this as a success.

Version 12.1.2 (12.1.2.26862)

Plus installed DirectX 9.

I'd like to get Vanguard running too, but I get the shader error (reported elsewhere in these forums) on going from Launchpad to the game exe.

As of 12.5, the crash on return to server select has been resolved - hurray!

However, now in-game all characters are invisible apart from weapons, shields and hats. Now officially unplayable ☹️.

The fix for this is to disable the Mac drivers:

-Launch CrossOver and go to Configure>Manage Bottles
-Select your EverQuest bottle and click the 'Advanced' tab
-Check the 'Use Legacy X Window System' box and then click the 'Reboot Bottle and Enable X Window System' button.

And disable GLSL:

http://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/mac/faq/cxgamesmac_enableglsl

but enter the string value as 'disabled'.

Further:

I still had some invisible models, but disabling hardware vertex shaders resolved that.

This solution didn't work on a second bottle that I use for multiple instances of Everquest, so I have reverted to 12.2.2.

This one seems to have worked for me. Ta muchly.

tinman

=) Just puttin' this here incase it helps someone's searchin'

Xubuntu 13.04 Everquest No Character Models

Testing with 13.0:

I am testing with enabling X WIndow, regedit for Direct3D and useGLSL = disabled. This look more promising, although there is still a lot of invisible items (mainly weapons and newer character models). Disabling hardware vertex shaders makes probably everything visible, although there is a visible deterioration in image quality.
