Apocrypha and EVE Online support

It is now official: CCP is discontinuing Linux as an "officially" supported platform, along with their client.

Now the key question is whether there will be troubles for those of us using Crossover Games and/or Wine to play after March 10th. As announced, the new expansion (Apocrypha) will bring a number of changes, including also the discontinuation of the classic Windows client in favor of a so called "Premium Lite" version.

Right now, when I try to play EVE on Crossover Games with Premium content enabled, it stops responding after a little while, so I was wondering... are there plans to test the Premium Lite client when the patch becomes available on the test server (Singularity), so that Crossover support for the new version is ensured in advance?

Thanks.

Oscar,

Have you tried the virtual desktop workaround for Eve? Might help with the lockups which seems to be listed as known bug with Wine (switching focus or something).

Keen to see about support for the "Premium Lite" version myself - I know that I'd be in need of a new Mac to run it regardless though as my trusty old Mini just doesn't cut the mustard. :(

Yes, I'm using the virtual desktop workaround.

But, still, it stops responding very easily if I enable the Premium content. With it disabled (classic client) it is rock solid, though :)

Ah... Never had the chance to check that - due to the underspecced Mini! ;)

I've tried the Apocrypha premium client on my system, but the ships and station models don't show.
Classic ran fine until recently, but it'll be gone in a few weeks.

reetings from CCP and thank you for replying.

Developing a cross platform application through an emulator is always a difficult task, thus we did have problems with it. in many cases we encountered bugs that were not apparent in the Windows nor Mac versions were appearing in the Linux version and vice versa.

Because of this it was quite hard to pinpoint the exact cause of the bug/error and since we didn’t have that many users using the Linux version of the client we didn’t receive as many bug reports nor complaints about these bugs. This caused us problems with fixing them since we in some cases never heard about the bugs that were plaguing our Linux players.

The EVE client does however seem to function quite well under Wine whether you are using a paid version of it ( Cedega or CodeWeavers ) or free versions. We will not do anything on our side to block Linux users from running EVE under Linux using
Wine.

Sincerely,
EVE Online Customer Support

That's CCP answer to my questions.
