Missing Stations, gates, etc

I've just installed Eve through steam; and things are working great - except I don't see any model for various large-ish objects - that is, stations, star gates, etc just aren't there. I can still interact with them, but they don't appear.

This is with Premium Graphics on, all optional upgrades installed and on a Macbook Pro 17" 2.6Ghz (GeForce 8600M GT)

Turning off premium graphics - everything shows up; turning them back on and everything vanishes -- also a number of textures on things that do show up, show up wrong -- just very dark with blue splotches.

I can imagine what the problem is. We have a hack to work around a graphics driver limitation(or something like that, not a bug), but this hack has to be activated in our registry. We activate it for apps called "ExeFile.exe", which is the main executable of the non-Steam eve. I guess the Steam executable is working differently. We have a proper fix for this problem coming up in the next release(We're trying to get an unsupported release going this week, and a supported one after that)

Will this new release fix other issues as well?

I use Crossover Games under Linux and, while the Premium client works great for the most part, it always hangs after playing for a while. It may take half an hour, one hour or a few of them, but it always ends up hanging (e.g. the screen freezes and, if I switch between desktops, it no longer gets drawn). I saw this reported a couple of times already, some time ago, but it seems the problem remains even in the latest snapshots :(

Thanks; so if I download and run it in a new bottle; it should work fine? I just like the idea of having only one bottle, and using Steam as a generic 'launcher' -- would this issue still exist if I download the client, install it in my Steam bottle and run it as a non-Steam app through Steam?

You can activate the workaround by creating the registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D/single_varyings_hacks (string value) and setting it to "enable" (without the quotes). This will activate the workaround globally for all apps. Keep in mind that it might negatively affect other applications installed in the same bottle.

This is set in HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/AppDefaults/ExeFile.exe/Direct3D/single_varyings_hacks already -- which is how I enabled GLSL to get it to let me use premium graphics; I just thought it worth mentioning that ExeFile.exe specific entries seem to work, but not this particular one?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Wine/Direct3D/single_varyings_hacks to enabled also didn't work; no change from not having the entry.

I wonder if the Steam client behaves differently...

Well, if theres any info I can provide that would help; let me know.

It plays well enough (non-premium, with the occasional freeze, and I often get the freeze-on-quit problem) that I'm just going to keep using it in Steam (i.e. it's not so bad that I'm going to bother re-downloading the non-Steam client, at least, not until I'm doing more in-game).

It looks like it's my machine -- I downloaded and installed the Eve client in it's own bottle, and stuff is still missing.

I installed the EVE Online client in to its own bottle, applied the registry change, and with the premium content turned on the space stations don't appear and many textures look wrong. With the premium content turned off everything appears as normal.

This is on a Xeon Quad Core Mac Pro with a GT8800.

Seems there is an issue with nVidia 7xxx cards -- some reports at http://eve-search.com/thread/793805/page/1 and a bug at http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11705 -- could this also be affecting the 8xxx cards (I have an 8600M GT)? Seems like it's been fixed in Wine 1.1.0.

Yup, this is fixed now in Wine, and the fix will be in the next CrossOver Games release. This is a bugfixing release that is currently in Beta, so if you are an advocate, please consider giving the beta build a try and reporting the outcome.

(Actually, it is not in the beta1 yet, but the fix will be in beta2, probably released today)

Should this fix be exposed in Games 7.1? It's not for me...

It is a bug in EVE. It is fixed in the Singularity test build. The issue is that EVE doesn't load the station model from its resource files.

The problem is an uninitialized variable in EVE, so the bug is random. EVE seems to be lucky almost 100% of the times in Windows and Linux, and fail virtually every time on MacOS. It's still a problem we cannot fix, so unfortunately you'll have to wait for the next eve update.
