crossover games and EVE-online 1st look

i've installed crossover games 7.0 + eve-premium on 2 linux boxes.

on both boxes, it is not possible to exit the game. it hangs and requires an x-server restart.
login screen: rendering of planet is distorted
select character page: rendering of main char. ( the large icon) is poor. mostly black.

box #1: in station fps: 40+
out of station, gates etc.: 30-40

cpu: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz

box #2: in station fps: 20+

Hi,
The problems are mostly known. Eve crashes on exit because it does not like the way we reset the screen resolution. I have not yet seen it kill the X server entirely though. Maybe you can work around the issue by using your Desktop's resolution in the game.

The planet flicker is a precision problem. Eve uses values in the area of 10^6 to 10^9 for the D3D transform matrices for the planet. This is asking for precision problems unfortunately. I think CCP would have to fix this problem. Luckily I have seen the problem on the login screen only.

The bad character portraits are a problem that is hunting us since a long time, but we couldn't catch it yet. Once the character portrait is generated, Eve caches it on disk. If you delete Eve's portrait cache it will regenerate it and might regenerate it more correctly, but it is always a bit of lottery.

The performance on your box #1 looks OK, although I'd have expected a bit more from a Geforce 8600. It depends on the resolution as well. The station performance on box #2 roughly matches the one I'm seeing on my Geforce 7400, the space performance doesn't look quite right though.

hi-

i made a mistake on the fps for box #1

box #1: out-of-station is not 30-40 fps. it is 3-4 fps.

using the cedega eve-client (tut mir leid) box#1 is running at 30-40 fps
while box#2 is in the 20's out-of-station.

as for having to restart the x-server on game exit, i set the kde sound options to their defaults in the kde control panel (on box#1). now the game shuts down with no screen freeze. and the sound is ok in-station.

sorry this is so piecemeal.

What performance do you get if you disable the premium graphics? Or are they disabled? It seems they are enabled because you talk about the planet flickering.

hi-

yes, they were enabled.

with the premium content disabled:

box#1:
in-station fps: 107
out-of-station: 30

box#2:
in-station fps: 78
out-of-station fps: 22

lookin' good :)

I've documented a small trick to improve the premium graphics performance in the tips section. Did you try that? Also it helps on my mac to disable shadows entirely. Somehow my Mac doesn't like rendering to a D3DFMT_G16R16 texture like eve does :-/

hi-

applied the HDR tip.

box #1:
in-station fps: 60
out-of-station: 27

box#2:
in-station fps: 25
out-of-station: 7

getting better. :)

hi-

non-premium version of eve.
i'm running into some serious graphics anamolies recently.

all of the scenery is gone into large rectangular forms.
i can fly through it and see the ship and stations - somewhat.
fps doesn't seem to be effected.

no pattern to this behavior. :(

robert,
When you see this the next time, can you make a screenshot and either link to it here or mail it to stefan at codeweavers dot com ?

stefan-

i have not been avoiding your request. :)

it seems that this behavior happens only (so far) after coming out of a stargate jump.

if you then tip ESC and bring up the config window, then just close the config window without doing anything else, the screen corrects to normal.

it usually begins after about 2 hours into game time. today it happened twice. yesterday once. random.

using the non-premium version.

I think this happens in windows too, I don't use it in windows, however some of my "space" mates complain all the time about the same issues. When this issues happen ...try to fullscreen and window or vice-versa to see if it solves them for the moment.
