For testing: audio fix for Mac

EDITED to include instructions for getting dsound.dll.so, too.

Hi,

I have a potential fix for the lack of audio in EVE Online on the Mac. If you are interested in testing it, please:

) Go to http://dl.codeweavers.com
) Enter access key: coreaudio_test
) Download winecoreaudio.tgz and dsound.dll.so.tgz
) If your browser doesn't expand the archives automatically, double-click them to expand them
) Control-click (or right-click) on CrossOver.app and select Show Package Contents
) In the new window, navigate to Contents > SharedSupport > CrossOver > lib > wine
) Rename the file winecoreaudio.drv.so to something else (like "winecoreaudio.drv.so.backup")
) Move the new winecoreaudio.drv.so from the archive that you downloaded into the "wine" folder
*) Likewise, backup and replace dsound.dll.so with the that you downloaded

Now see if EVE has sound. Let me know what you find.

NOTE: this is test software. It may cause problems -- anything from sound in other programs failing to the inability to launch any Windows programs at all. Only try this if you're comfortable working with untested software. If you need to revert, just trash the new winecoreaudio.drv.so and restore the name of the previous one.

Thanks,
Ken

Ken:

I moved the file into Crossover and loaded up EVE. I haven't used it extensively (ie. about 15 minutes) but so far it seems to work fine. I didn't experience any unusual sounds or crashes. Play was about the same, and the sound worked.

I'll update this thread if I run into any problems.

-Kurt

(oh, this was on a MacBook Pro 2.33GHz, 2GB RAM)

Ken, thank you very much!

So far, the sound seems fine. If I use any other programs that also use sound, I'll note any oddities.

I'll update my post here with any developments, for better or otherwise.

Glad this is finally working!

Edit: Okay, well, at the moment EVE won't log in (server problems, it seems, nothing to do with Crossover). Anyway, the login music seems a little wonky. I've heard it hundreds of times, but it seems that it's skipping ahead a fraction of a second in parts, like a scratchy record. I'll have to listen once I can log in to see if it's happening in-game as well, but it may be a while until the servers are up again.

Okay, I was able to get in-game, and the music seems to skip there as well. It's very minor - if you hadn't ever heard the music outside of the game or in the native client you might not notice - but it's definitely doing it. So far, that seems to be the only problem.

Well I've tested the patch today and it doesn't work at all. Nothing even after restarting the computer. the Eve client pop up a window with the message : "Sound driver not found. Sound will be disabled". As I've the crossover software for test on about a month now I think I won't be able to see further update as it will expire in four days. Anyway, For info my computer is a macbook pro core duo and it run mac os 10.4.10

Arnaud, it sounds as though either the download was corrupted or you didn't install it properly. Did you unarchive the .tgz file that you downloaded? When it is unarchived, it should produce a file named winecoreaudio.drv.so. You need to move that file into the "wine" folder inside the "lib" folder in "CrossOver" in "SharedSupport" in "Contents" within the application package (after first backing up the file that was originally there).

It's remotely possible that you need to be careful about which program you use to unarchive the .tgz file. There's a tool built into Mac OS X that will do it properly, but something else like StuffIt Expander might not. If you select the .tgz file in the Finder, the Open With submenu of the File menu should show BOMArchiveHelper as the first choice. If it's not the first choice, then some other program was probably used to unarchive it. You can select BOMArchiveHelper from that menu to force that utility to be used to unarchive the .tgz file.

Ken, thanx for your quick help. It seemes it has to work but it don't. I've redownload the archive. Unarchive it with BOMArchiveHelper as you recommand (it was the default choice of my system) Change the name of the old wincoreaudio with backup at the end of the name (allready done before) put the new one in the same place and change the place of the old. Well, I've made all the thing in the proper way. But it doesn't work at all. I Don't understand... Could it be a problem with a tier software ? The only exotic soft about sound on my computer is Soundflower. A virtual tunnelingsystem to get sound from one app to another. I'll remove it and inform you if it's change something.

EDIT : Uninstalling Soundflower doesn't made any change... If you have an idea.

A log might help me figure out what's going wrong. Please do the following:

) From CrossOver's Programs menu, select Run Command
) In the Run Command dialog, select the bottle with EVE in it
) Browse to pick the EVE executable. It can usually be found at Program Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe
) Enable "Create log file"
) In the Other field, type the following: +wave,+coreaudio
) Press Run
) Select a place to save the log and give it a name
) EVE will start and presumably give you the error about no sound driver. Exit EVE.
) Go to http://dl.codeweavers.com
) Enter access key: coreaudio_log
*) Use the buttons on the resulting page to browse for your log file and upload it

Let me know here when you have done that. Thanks.

I have done the log and uploaded it to you.
Thanks

Works like a charm for me. No problems so far!
Thanks for letting us try it out.
( on a Macbook Pro C2D 2.16Ghz & crossover 6.1.0 )

I've a good news
I've ordered Crossover.
And reinstall the whole thing (and the eve client also)
Now everything works just fine, with sound !
Anyvway, I think the problem I encounter may happen to anyone. So It's a good idea to see where it came from.
Thanx for your work.
A.Boutle

The patch works like a charm!
Thx!
I'm considering purchasing crossover now.

2Ghz Intel Cure Duo, 1 GB RAM, Mac OS X 10.4.10
Cheers,
Jochen

It works fine for me. MacBookPro 15 in 2GHz. The sound is a bit choppy, but I'm guessing EVE is like that. For example the voice sometimes speaks twice or with gaps.

As of the newest patch, the test audio fix appears to no longer work (game crashes on startup) - disabling core audio in the winecfg tool should allow the game to be run.

I have updated the original post on this thread with instructions for downloading a replacement dsound.dll.so, too.

Thx Dr.Ken... Now EVE works with sound for me aswell.

<running on a Macbook Pro 2,4Ghz 1920x1200>

Thx for the quick help.

As i am still a trial user of Crossover i am not allowed to post a reply in the right thread ( starmap problems )... so i will try it here.

The file u uploaded for download with the pass "lightfix" is still crrupt or something, its there, but its not working, EVE freezes when openng the starmap.

Is it possible someone can upload a working file?

And can someone tell me how to go to Mac OS when playing EVE without closing the game (like alt-tab in windows)
ok i found out how to restore from fullscreen, but how to go back to fullscreen mode, or even hide the running application (eve) ?

thx in advance
/Sigurd

Hi Ken,

after replacing dsound.dll.so, sounds works fine.

Thanks!

I think it must have been Stefan who posted that. Or my memory is failing. 😉

I don't know about that file. We have had reports that some of the new MacBook Pros have problems running EVE Online. EVE hangs and the computer can even lock up. We have some success in fixing this for our beta of CrossOver 6.2 with our MacBook Pro, but some users are reporting that our fix doesn't help them. We're quite perplexed by the issue; it seems like a bug in the video driver that comes with the OS. 😥

CrossOver does not currently have a way to go back into fullscreen mode once you restore out of it. The restore function was mostly an escape valve in case a game crashes, leaving you stuck in fullscreen mode.

You can run EVE in CrossOver's virtual desktop window, though. In the Manage Bottles window, invoke the winecfg control panel for the bottle with EVE in it. On winecfg's Graphics tab, enable emulation of a virtual desktop and set the window size. OK out of winecfg. After that, programs in that bottle will run in a window. With fullscreen games like EVE, the window does display some graphical garbage where its title bar should be, but is otherwise properly functional.

I hope that helps.
