Ongoing problem in getting Eve to run (Mac Pro, OS 10.4.10)

Howdy. I've been using Crossover for about a month now, and in all this time I've yet to get Eve Online to run without crashing promptly on startup. I've followed a number of the threads and tried various tips (including the "voiceenabed=0" one), yet Eve always crashes promptly on startup. I only see the splash screen initially but can't get the log-in screen before crashing.

In another thread, I read that with the 10.4.10 update, Apple believes this problem to be fixed (it seems to affect nVidia cards, which is what I have), but for me, it certainly isn't. I'm definitely not suffering from the "missing Arial font" issue either.

I made one curious observation that may be of some help. With a new Windows XP bottle and installing Eve Online from the pre-Revelations II installer, I found that everything (except sound) worked as it should on the first program launch. It prompts me to download the patch, which normally I have done in my other install attempts, after which the program then goes into its pattern of crashing after splash screen. This last time, I declined to download the update and was then faced with the login screen... all appearing to work like it should. My login attempt was rejected due to client being outdated, but this was further than I've ever seen before. Anyway, I closed Eve, re-launched, and it went back to the pattern of crashing before the login screen. So... the way I see it, "something" is happening to cause everything to go haywire after the initial launch. Any thoughts? Further tips?

Yes, this is a problem with Macs with NVidia graphics chips. We think it's a bug in the OpenGL driver, but it's also possible that it's a bug in our code that only affects NVidia-based Macs. We hope to have a solution, or at least a workaround, with our next release.

The issue that 10.4.10 has fixed is not related. That problem was that the entire Mac would freeze up when using CrossOver.

I'm going to somewhat reluctantly post a link below. It includes instructions for downloading and applying a hack to workaround this problem with EVE for CrossOver 6.1. Please pay attention to the caveat: This should only be used to fix EVE on NVidia-based Macs and it may break other Direct3D programs. Don't apply it if you use such programs and would be upset if they break.

Anyway, the hack is described in the following ticket: http://www.codeweavers.com/support/tickets/browse/?ticket_id=128446

Thank you for the workaround, and the warning to go with it. I decided to make a copy of Crossover with the hacked file so if it did work for Eve but break something else, I could use either copy as needed (just have to run the renamed copy first to make it active). Anywho, it worked like a charm! Thank you so much... I've basically been only booting to Windows just to fiddle around in the game from time to time, and it was dreadful. I can deal with the lack of sound for now. Since you already have a standing offer for a kidney donation over this, I think I'll throw a lung into the pot. ;)
