Excessive Memory Usage

When I start playing the game I have about 50% free ram. After playing 20 minutes or so, it balloons up to 95% usage and the game slows down. Does anyone have fix for this?

I'm experiencing the same. I've seen threads on Reddit before about memory leaks in ED when played via Crossover but hadn't experienced them until today after the update. The game start to hang and gets unplayable when used RAM gets above around 14GB on my 16GB Mac and I have to kill the process, which is only after about 20-30 minutes of playing in my case.

Nothing has changed.
When using D3DMetal, a VRAM leak is still observed.
When using DXMT, the game crashes at the very beginning of “Preparing the planetary generation system,” right after shader compilation.

I’ve reverted to Crossover 24.0.7 and it’s much better again. The RAM usage still creeps up slowly but I just played for almost 2 hours and it seems to stabilise at around 11.5GB. Edit: Now after an hour more it’s at 12.3GB.

To temporarily fix the problem with Steam not starting that is experienced with the latest Steam update under that version of Crossover, I switched the Bottle’s Windows version to Win 7.

Hope Crossover 25 gets a timely fix anyway.

I have noticed the same as well. As far as I'm aware, Elite Dangerous has always had issues with memory usage. I'm not entirely sure if it's a memory leak per se, but it's the only game I play that consistently increases RAM usage to the point of crashing the game or bringing the system to a crawl.

Here is a reddit thread I created back when I was playing the game through Whisky: https://redd.it/18dxhu9. Oddly enough, this problem almost completely disappeared when I switched to CrossOver 24.0.7, and has only now reappeared with CrossOver 25. I do not believe it is related to the Trailblazers update, so it must have something to do with CrossOver 25 (or its components) or Wine 10. I would appreciate if CodeWeavers could look into this (and the high resolution fix I've mentioned in my latest rating), given that they advertise this version of CrossOver as supporting Elite Dangerous.

Thanks for the tip regarding changing the bottle type to fix the Steam issue. I will likely redownload CrossOver 24.0.7 solely for this game.

I'll also mention that I filed a radar with Apple (FB13457022) over a year ago about this, but did not receive a reply.

Hi yeah I am suddenly having issues with ED after upgrading to Crossover 25. In the prior version (latest 24.x, forget, sorry...) I had it working very well on my MB pro M3 18Gb - I only run it at 1080p anyway and it was great. Crossover 25 has introduced the issues everyone describes of the game slowing to 2/3 frames a sec after a small amount of playing (10 mins to 20 mins). So I'd like to register my vote for this to be looked at if possible. Meanwhile I'm going to see if I can dual run 24.x (I want to keep v25 for RDR2!)

Chiming in to say I'm experiencing the same thing in CrossOver 25 when using D3DMetal. Also, I can confirm it crashes when preparing the planet generation system when trying to use DXMT or DXVK.

I found the issue!

The installer is setting the bottle Graphics to Auto and the Sync to Default. I set them to DXVK and eSync and it fixed it.

Ah unfortunately that’s not helping me - trying DXVK and Esync just leaves me stuck at zero at the parent generation part, then black screen. Trying DXMT and Esync is the same.

The only way I get something is with Metal (I’m not sure if Esync or Msync help, haven’t done a full comparison… all I know is performance vs 24.0.7 seems worse)

For around 10 minutes before some extreme slowdown after simply some flying between stations; no planetary landings etc. memory usage close to 100%…

Try it again, planet generation took a long time for me too, but it eventually finished. After the first time, planet generation is fast. Eric at CodeWeavers confirmed that DXVK and eSync are the proper settings for ED.

Ok thanks I will try that this eve again!
