Problem starting Direct X

My problem with DDO is that once I install DDO exactly as instructed, even to the point of downloading a new client instead of using my previous backup of the client, the bottle cannot start DirectX 9. The exact error message is:

"could not initialize Direct 3D. Please ensure that DirectX 9.0 or higher is installed. [105]"

I got no error messages while installing DX9. My exact response from Crossover is: "The installation completed. More diagnostic information can be found in the debug log." I saved the log, but I don't know what parts are important. Please ask for the important parts so I don't have to post the entire thing. I did get several dozen lines of "err:setupapi:do_file_copyW Unsupported style(s) 0x144", in case that helps.

I am able to start PyLOTRO, patch DDO, and apparently login, but I never even see the turbine splash, much less the character select screen.

I am on the trial version now, but if I can get DDO running, I will upgrade in a heartbeat (to keep from having to get Win7...).

Thanks,

Ed

1- Did you install using the CrossTie installer?

That should have automatically installed the DirectX modules.
I know that it does for the LOTRO install, but I haven't tried the DDO CrossTie installer.

2- What instructions did you follow?
The CrossTIe installer is a "one-click" installation process... no instruction necessary.

The CrossTie installer is found on the "Details" tab, the big orange button "Install via CrossTie."

I did use the Crosstie installer, and the DirectX module (among several others) did install, DDO just can't see it.

The instructions come up in a webpage after the modules install, telling what to do in the DDO install, and instructions for PyLotro.

I fixed my DirectX problem. kthxbye.

;)

Just kidding...

Okay, this one was a real head scratcher. The problem was that I put my video card in the second PCIE x16 slot, not the first. My motherboard expects me to only use the second slot if I have a second video card.

Too bad. It fit so much better in the second slot. Mah, I'll just have to remove the card to work on HDDs in the future. No biggie.

Anyway, thanks for the help!

Ed

I have the same issue.

"could not initialize Direct 3D. Please ensure that DirectX 9.0 or higher is installed. [105]"

I have installed using the Crosstie, and then reinstalled the whole program doing the same. I tried manually reinstalling directX 9 into the bottle after reinstalling the client and dowloading all the patches.

It was working when I went to bed earlier today, and now that I'm awake I can't launch DDO. I did do a package update in yum last night while DDO was running, but I'm still on the same kernel. It may be that some wine related library changed, but I don't know for sure.

PYLORO client downloaded and worked over the latest flurry of patches, so it's not a DDO patch issue. I did confirm that all patches are up to date in the fresh install.

I'm on Fedora 17 64 bit. No issues as far as the video card or drivers (still on the same driver module and kernel as when it was working and I only have one video card option in my laptop).

For anyone else getting this error message check "glxgears". On a lark I decided to do so and discovered my akmod kernel module was flaky.

I uninstalled and installed the proprietary nVidia driver by hand. All is well with DDO, except previous problems.

So if you get this error, troubleshoot it assuming you have bad video drivers and see what happens.
