White screen of failure?

I'm on a MBP version 10.5.8.

I downloaded the necessary DDO install files into a flash drive from my Windows PC, so that I didn't have to use bootcamp. I then installed CXG and Pylotro on my mac, got all that to work so far, finished the patch, and logged in. However, once I log in, I get the white Output window, then my screen goes black, and then it goes white. I no longer have a mouse, nor can I see any part of my desktop. Escape doesn't work either, so I'm forced to manually shut down my laptop and start it up again.

Any advice?

Hi,

On my iMac it is absolutely necessary to enable 'Emulate a virtual desktop',
or DDO won't start and does weird things like you explain... you can alter that
setting manually in the Wine Configuration GUI or you can use this...see;

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=7781

Cheers!

I'm not sure what/where the Wine Configuration GUI is, so I tried the link you provided, but I'm not sure how I should be installing it. I tried installing it in it's own windows 2000 bottle, and then in the DDO bottle, and neither worked. Should I try the PyLOTRO bottle or am I going in a completely wrong direction?

Hi again,

..sorry, I meant to say you should apply that to the pylotro bottle

Cheers!

<snip>

..I should open my eyes... if you're running 10.5.8 then I
should ask exactly which video chipset your Mac has...

Cheers!

Would this be it?

Chipset Model: NVIDIA GeForce 9400M

Hi again,

Yes, thank you - nvidia 9400M is the video chipset you have,

and to be honest, I'm not sure if DDO runs with that chipset and/or
OSX version ... I really couldn't say, but the 9400M has had it's
share of problems....

..there's another thread in this same forum, expounding other issues
with the 9400M...

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=4048;forum=1;msg=107597

...also, it may actually be a bother using the DDO files from your
bootcamp session - I'm not sure, I don't use windows =) What I do
know is that I actually reworked the crosstie profile here some time
back, and rechecked it recently on the iMac and it was as ok as it's
going to be on the Ati HD5670 video chipset I have...

...anyway, the only way I can really help here, is if you do install
things using the crosstie provided -- this is important, as it sets up
a known runtime environment that I am using here, and it's easier to
debug what's going wrong. If you're able to install DDO via crosstie,
it's what I would advise you to do first...

..with CXG running, Crossover menu -> Configure -> Manage Bottles...
That will have the bottle manager GUI pop up. Select the DDO bottlw in
the left pane, then click on the Control Panel tab, and launch the Wine
Configuration item. Click on the Graphics tab in the GUI of the Wine
COnfiguration GUI that appears, and there you will see the 'Emulate a
virtual desktop' setting, and the Desktop size setting. After enabling
this (tick the checkbox), click on Apply -> Ok and you're done...

Let us know how you get along...

Cheers!

Okay, that got me much further than before.

I tried logging in before checking the 'emulate a virtual desktop' box, (because I forgot I had to do that the first time around), and the game started but there was no visual, only sound. Then I skipped the intro 'movie' and got an error..

Fehler im Spiel(Error in the Game)
-You do not have the current version of the client installed.

Now, after emulating the desktop, I log in and get a DDO splash screen, which flashes to a grey/blue? screen with white stripes up and down, and then I get that same game error I mentioned above.

EDIT: I tried the 'Tips & Tricks: Client crashing just before characters selection screen' thing, but it didn't change anything.

This message is from Turbine and implies that the Patch process did not work, or needs to be run again.

Also, make certain that you have the Vertex shader disabled.

The game (DDO or LOTRO) needs to be the same bottle where you install PyLotRO.

You can have multiple bottles (I have both DDO and LOTRO bottles) but you need separate copies of PyLotRO installed in each one. (And yet another copy if you have one of the test clients, like Bullroarer for LOTRO, installed.)

Check and make certain you have the Vertex shader turned off (set to none).

You should be able to use Force Quit option on the Mac (cmd- option- escape). This should pop-up a window allowing you to force quit PyLotRO which should give you your screen back, or CXG.

???

To "turn off/on" the virtual desktop...
1- In CXG "configure pulldown" select manage bottles.
2- highlight the bottle you wish to configure
3- on the Control Panel tab: double-click "Wine Configuration.
4- In the "Wine configuration window" click on the "Graphics" tab.
5- Set the Vertex Shader Support to "none"
6- The "Emulate a virtual desktop" is a check box.
7- click apply.
8- Quit CXG
9- re-launch CXG then PyLotRO.

The current version of CXG 10.1 requires OSX 10.6

After DDO update 5 came out (June of 2010), there were significant issues with CXG 10.0 which had to do with the Turbine client actually crashing. (It actually generates a .log file)

These problems were finally fixed by a change outlined in TIps and Tricks "Client crashing just before character selection screen"

Sigh... I'm just working down the list, should have done it in reverse order, I guess.

At any rate, under LOTRO Tips & Tricks: "Grey" screen solution; Complete Step-by-step installation instructions
Is the "solution" to the Grey Screen issue.... they are "images" which Turbine's client downloads, but PyLotRO does not.

Thank you, I've got it working now. :)
