Snow Leopard 64bit kernel runs alot more stable for me.
Hello -
Just made the switch from a trusty but outdated Dell windows xp sp2 or whatever box to a brand-spanking new iMac with OSX 10.6.2. I believe I can probably get the ddo stuff figured out, but I would like to avoid installing windows on my new iMac if I can, but I still want to play ddo. Is that possible? I'm not really interested in the Boot Camp route. Is CrossOver the only software I need to buy to make the iMac run ddo? And then once I have that, is it pretty self explanatory?
Lastly, does anyone have the newest ddo update address?
Did you read the Tips & Tricks section?
Hello. Yes I read the tips and tricks. I'm still not sure I completely get the bottles and such.
I went to the ddo.com site because one of the links for the full version of the game (elsewhere in this forum) wanted me to pay for a subscription to their service, one hung at about 1.5 Gb of the download, and the other said it was going to take quite a while.
The ddo.com site was willing to let me download the full hi-res version, but actually it wasn't - it wanted to download an installer. No problem, I figure, i just paid $40 smackers for a program that lets me run programs (CxG). Well, actually, maybe I did, maybe I didn't, since when I tried to execute the download manager in a bottle, I was never able to get that working. So far I haven't really gotten anything to work.
Currently I'm downloading the "full version" from the slow but still going site, and it's about 1.4 Gb into the 3.9Gb. On my outdated windows 98 machine, which is still sitting next to the beautiful iMac, it's downloading the same thing, with the downloader, from ddo.com, and it'll be done in an hour or so. Then maybe I can get the CxG software installer to put it in a bottle or something.
So here's my question - I don't need WINE and CxG, right? The CxG site seems to imply that CxG is sort of a modified WINE?
I guess I need PyLOTRO to update the DDO engine, right? And that should go in the same 'bottle' as the DDO?
No, you don't need wine to run CxG. yes, you do need PyTORO and it should be installed in the same bottle as DDO.
Hi.
Okay, so this is definitely looking promising. I have downloaded the 3.9 Gb version, and PyLOTRO, and have actually watched the intro movie, WITH SOUND!, and then it said I needed to update or patch or something.
So I went back to PyLOTRO and there was now a new item on the tools menu (PATCH) that I swear wasn't there before that is currently patching the game.
I am pretty confident at this point.
I should also say, for anyone else reading this, if I can get this done, anyone can. I haven't had a MAC in 15 years, and was on XP SP2 until about 3 weeks ago. This is not rocket science. I think the key thing is trusting CxG and PyLOTRO to do what they're supposed to. Am I right, guys?

Pretty much. PyLOTRO is rock stable right now. LOTRO is also stable. CXG is stable. The best thing anyone can do is to not screw with any settings, follow the Tips & Tricks entries (by Alan and myself) and install it into a clean bottle.
That being said, if you happen to have a "new" model Mac, with a "new" video chipset, you may have some issues while Apple, WINE and Codeweaers hammer out issues with video drivers.
Officially, Turbine's online games are "unsupported" by Codeweavers. IMHO, they will continue to be until the official .NET-based launcher works. There are some high mucky-mucks in Codeweavers who do play LOTRO, so LOTRO (and by extension DDO) will remain on the radar, but not as a primary target.
I just wish I had more time to dive into Mirkwood. :( Damned reality!
Although things are working pretty well for me, I have had some instances where the game will close instead of going, for example, from StormReach to House Deneith...
Any ideas why that's happening?
that happened to me, too. i never got to the root of the problem. i just took the good with the bad on that one.
I keep getting an error about not finding an exact match for OPENA32DLL... any way around that?

And here's another annoying thing - the little window always pops up behind the launcher window. Now that I know it's (probably) there, it's not such a big deal, but I'd prefer if it was going to pop up, why wouldn't it come up in front?
All that said, I played for 4 hours last night with only one hiccup, early on, and then it went great from there.
I'm in the same boat - the game runs rock solid, other than when moving between areas. I haven't had it happen on quest-based instances, but have had issues when moving from the starter island to stormreach and the like.
The Wine Window settings adjustments in the tips section in the compatibility database resolved all my other issues with DDO other than super minor stuff, like switching windows causing the loader window to pop forward. I'm really impressed that it runs so well.
I don't have Wine Windows, just CxG. I am getting that opena32dll error now in the middle of running down a path... that's kind of annoying.

One assumes you are talking about PyLotRO's windows... They are artifacts from X11 -- in PyLotRO "tools" pulldown, check "Hide Main Window." Now when you "patch" (or select anything else in the "tools" pulldown) the patch window will hide the launcher window until you exit the "patch" window.
The PyLotRO launcher puts up an "abort /save" window, which will remain centered on the screen and behind the main game window. I run in windowed mode and always drag that window to the side so that the abort button is available for those times when the window freezes.
