Starting Over with 8.0 / Unlimited

Now that DDO has a "free" version, I'll start whacking away at DDO as much as LOTRO, although it seems DDO is at the same impasse as LOTRO.

  • DDO cannot be downloaded via Turbine Download Manager (TDM), as it relies on .NET 2.0 which doesn't work under CXG

  • DDO cannot be downloaded via the standalone installs, as they rely on Pando (a bittorrent-like downloader) which doesn't work under CXG

  • Once acquired, the installation will generate errors around installing .NET 1.1. (Acknowledge and disregard this error .NET is used only in the Launcher/Patcher, which is replaced by PyLOTRO)

  • Making a few obvious adjustments to PyLOTRO (Thanks, Alan!) will launch/patch DDO without further issue.

Fortunately, DDO does fit on a single DVD, so if you know someone who uses Windows, the install files can be burned and brought over to Mac/Linux that way.

post script

The need for fakenet11.reg is no longer. This has been addressed over the past year with updates to CrossOver Games.

The need to hunt down a patchclient.dll from LOTRO is only present if you are using an old installer or original DVD. The DDO/U download has the current files.

Specifically, for my install, I went to Windows to download the Standard res client, rebooted into OSX (Snow Leopard) and simply installed it into the same bottle as LOTRO. No hacking or file copying involved.

Hi, if it can't be downloaded from TDM or the standalone, where did you get it?
Thanks

You have to run the downloader on a virtual machine running Windows. I used Virtualbox (free from Sun).

Or get the last Stormreach client, install that and replace patchclient.dll with the one in here. It'll take a bit longer to patch first time (due to it not being the latest version of DDO) but it's better than setting up a virtual Windows system IMHO.

You can download the full game from the main DDO site here http://www.ddo.com/ddosupport/download-ddo
(Make sure you pick one of the "Full Game" downloads, as TDM wont work under wine).

Also, I believe the version of patchclient.dll shipped with Mod 9 works as is - ie, they've made the same change to it that they made to lotro's patchclient. Worth further testing, at any rate.

I can confirm that the mod 9 patchclient does have the required function exposed, so no need to use LotROs any more.

That link only downloads 1.6mb. Still goes through TDM.

I'm booting up Windows so I can sniff out exactly where TDM connects to. I don't think it uses Bittorrent like Blizzard's downloader does. I'll let everyone know.

The Turbine Download Manager (TDM) uses a proprietary P2P scheme which is similar to Bit-torrent, but different, and NOT compatible with it.
It started out supporting only LOTRO about 18 months ago, and was expanded to support DDO recently.

One fairly extensive description is here.

http://lorebook.lotro.com/wiki/Turbine_Download_Manager

Note that it requires .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework SP1

There is/was a useful FAQ on the support machine which has not been up since at least earlier today.
turbine.fuzeqna.com ... which is a hosting company... even though it is an official turbine link off the LOTRO Forum home page.
http://turbine.fuzeqna.com/lotro.support/consumer/kbdetail.asp?kbid=1981&SearchType=advanced&referrer=&CustID=&rfield=&usertype=&formaction=search&bUseEditor=&IncludeHTML=&gpn=&gpv=&keyword=download+m

I believe that document (if it still exists) tells who actually wrote it. It may also still be in the TDM client.
(I used TDM back in its beta days and gave up on it since I had the DVDs and it was pretty buggy back then, and unistalled it.
I only used it to download the LOTRO and DDO music.)

There is a TDM forum section on the main LOTRO forums...
http://forums.lotro.com/forumdisplay.php?f=214

Knew I would find this eventually...
The DDO Support section still identifies the downloader as Pando.
"This download uses Pando Media Booster to download the installation files for installing DDO."

I also found this posting by one of the Turbine Devs...

http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=289656

We use two completely different systems for downloads of LOTRO, each of which has their own P2P network:
Turbine Download Manager, which uses a tiered download system that will get players into the game quickly. High resolution game data is always included with TDM.
Pando downloaders, available in standard and high resolution flavors.
If you visit this page, you will see links for three different LOTRO download options.

Dang. Lots of activity yet no one has Googled it: Download from FilePlanet

Tips & Tricks entry added as well Someone care to try that out?

p.s. FWIW, I haven't been posting anything simply because I cannot offer anything more :) ...and my Macs run it flawlessly so I can't assist anyway.

edited to fix the URL and other stuff

Unbe-friggin-lievable. 😭

This time the problem is with FilePlanet. The FilePlanet website does not work with OS X. Apparently, there's some hack to adjust Firefox to trick FP into it working, but I have no idea how to get that working right (and it's too late at night for me to care too much. Sorry! :) )

I suppose if you have CrossOver (or CrossOver Pro) you can install IE 6 or 7 and download it that way.

There is also this one on AusGamers but I don't know if it the full client or what (I don't play DDO and I'm not going to download 4gb just for the sheer fun of it).

I'm DLing it right now, having installed Firefox 3.5.3 in my DDO bottle- although the FilePlanet download manager wants IE6 or up, you can use an alternative HTTP downloader if you click through.

Had previously got DDO running by copying a completed install across from my Parallels VM, but have been having some random crashing and focusing issues when running in windowed mode. I plan to reinstall 'properly' into my DDO bottle in the hope that the move from Parallels to CXG was the problem...

For giggles, I just tried to download the AusGamers one... unfortunately, i've got a craptastic connection, and Safari estimates a 10 hour download, with the time remaining INCREASING.

I will go out on a limb and say that any "Eberron Unlimited" download that is approximately 4GB in size is the correct one to get. Any download that is a few MB is just a stub or other peer-to-peer downloader and should be avoided.

I can now verify that DDO works much better installed into the bottle rather than copied from a Windows install. Still got some bugs with focus if you run in windowed mode though.

Here are the six steps I followed to download the unlimited DDo

First:

Go to http://download.mmosite.com/freedown.php?id=1559 and download game. (this downloads the whole game at once so installer is bypassed)

second:

Go to http://www.lotrolinux.com/ and download the game launcher.

third:

When you have everything downloaded open crossover and install DDo using a win200 bottle.

Fourth:

Open the bottle DDo is in and install the pyLotRo launcher into it.

fifth:

When it is all installed open pyLotRo and click on tools/setting wizard. A window will pop up click Dungeons and Dragons online under drop down.

Sixth:

Click on tools/patch to update the game. While the game is updating go to www.ddo.com and create a free account.
