DDO Working on 10.5.5 OSX Macbook Air

It took me about a day to get it working, and maybe 2 hours of actual time if you don't count downloads.

*) I purchased an online copy, downloaded the downloader app, and then had to run it on an XP machine to snag the install files. I couldn't figure out a way to get the downloader to work, but then again I didn't try very hard either.

) Downloaded & installed the trial copy of Crossover Games.
) Downloaded & installed the Apple Dev Tools (to get make, gcc, etc.)
) Downloaded, compiled, and installed the Mono/GMCS package.
) Downloaded, compiled & installed the LOTRLinux client. (Required?)
) Downloaded & installed the LOTR Mac Client.
) Installed the DDO game from a 2000 bottle. Hung on .NET at the end, and I canceled out.
) Did the regedit hack for .NET. (Which I now believe I didn't need to do. I should have done this before the install if I cared.)
) Signed up for a DDO account using my SN.
) Downloaded a LOTR patch replacement dll, found on their forums at this site, and moved it to my DDO installation, with a new name.
) Started the LOTRMac Client and Did a Tools->Patch. It hung after awhile and I force quit it. This got me past a dll error message.
*) Created a simple replacement UserPreferences.ini in my '~HOME/Documents/Dungeons and Dragons Online'. A search found this on the DDO forums. This got me past the "131" error. This resets my sound options to mute, but those settings can be changed via 'Options' in game.

*) Started up, watched the movie, and was presented with character creation screen.

I have no idea about performance yet.

Thanks Alan & Walter. Your posts contained all of the pointers I needed.

Is that their new downloader that downloads the game in segments? If so I don't think it would work under CXG at the moment (it uses .NET).

If it is the old downloader it should work under CXG but I'm not 100% on that (I used it once about 7 months ago so the memory is a bit foggy as to which system I used it on).

As for the rest, these ones aren't necessary if you use the LotROMac package (you do need to install mono but shouldn't need to compile anything)

Glad it's working for you, performance should be OK as it is more or less the same engine LOTRO uses and that performs well under CXG.

I was able to run the new downloader once I'd applied the "fake" .NET settings to the registry. So it makes a .NET call but doesn't seem to care about it. I'm not able to patch a straight install to the current version, though, so I've installed & patched on Windows for my working installs.

Great to see you got it working and that our conversation here was helpful.

Did you pick a server to play on yet?

Old Issues

Just to be clear for other folks: LOTRMac requires Mono, which wasn't obvious at the time (although the need to have it for LOTRLinix kind of implies things ...) There's a mono intall package for the mac, so you don't have to compile it, and don't need the dev tools. (Although I should have installed them long before now anyway ...)

The RegEdit hack should be done PRIOR to the initial game install in Crossover, if you want to avoid the .Net error/fail at the end. But then again the failure message doesn't impact the game, so you could ignore it. I don't think you need it (.Net hack) for anything else.

Yes, it's their new "7-parts" downloader. Not a huge deal.

Performance

Not great on my Air, even at 800x600/LOW. Then again, it IS an ultraportable. I need to mess with the settings to see what I can do to improve things. I think it's playable on an Air, but it was having trouble at the first docks in Stormreach with a few people hanging around ... I think it's mostly an issue of the Airs chipset and my vanilla settings.

Bugs

Just one of note: The game would 'hang.' I only noticed this when running in a resolution 1280x768 or greater in windowed mode. I have not yet tested comprehensively (different resolutions & windows/full screen) but the issue was seen several times, and only when I was attempting to run in higher resolutions. I need to do some searching to see if it's a known issue and/or further investigate the problem.

I'm going to tweak for a weke more or so and then try to write up something nicer.

Thanks for your hard work.
