Product Activation???
Anonymous

If it has a problem with Product Activation, what if you already have it installed on a Windows partition under Windows? Since it is already installed, there is no product activation issue. Assuming the mapping of the Windows drive to Linux can be done properly, it should run, right?

Has anyone tried this? I'd CrossOver right this second if this does work this way.

i have been able to install the software but yet been able to run it, i presume that the activation screens are the application activation, i.e. invoking the application to load with all its wigits etc. I was un-aware that it needed to be "activated" like windows for software registration.

It's a little bit more than the activation wizard itself. I created a WinInstall of Dreamweaver MX 2004 and installed it that way. All I need to do was copy the files over from the "distrib" folder and import the registry settings. Licensing and everything is taken care of and the same with activation.

The end result:

Still doesn't work.

When Dreamweaver MX 2004 runs in Windows - there is one main .exe that resides in memory. The Macromedia Licensing.exe. On Windows XP and 2000, it lays dormant (stopped) until Dreamweaver 2004 MX is run. Also, running Macromedia_Licensing_Installer.dll is an issue after the program is installed. That runs on the first instance of the program.

I'm sure in order to get this to work, it's going to take time and effort. I'm still hoping Macromedia comes up with a client for Linux since people have been begging for it for years. Until then, we have to hack at it until we get it to work.

Yah, this is the whole challenge; the licensing manager keeps it from
running. Unfortunately, licensing programs really don't take kindly
to people trying to diagnose them, so they are especially hard to
nail, hence our inability to support this product to date.

I do know that Macromedia is interested in the Linux market;
if/when that will ever bear fruit for you I wish I could predict.

But, based on what I know, I do think they are trying to be
one of the good guys, so please cut 'em slack. (But don't stop
telling 'em you'll buy a Linux version, that's how to make the
case ).

Cheers,

Jeremy

I give them the benefit of the doubt. I've been a beta tester for their products for as long as I've been a web developer and devoted user of DW since ver 1.0. They have gotten plenty of request for Linux since ver. 4.0. I'm hoping that the next version of DW will be Linux compatible. Until then, there's always projects like Eclipse and Nvu. I still prefer DW.

I've been running test for my group @ GSA to see how much of our Windows environment we can replace. There are several request, mainly amongst the developers to move to Linux. The Web Developers here mainly use ColdFusion Studio 5.0 (which I see isn't listed anywhere) or HomeSite + (ver. 5.5).In the mean time, CrossOver is a great product.

I'm looking forward to the day when any package can run on Linux.
