Dragon 10 Experience

I installs but it doesn't draw the Dragon bar completely and the administration settings are greyed out.
I tested it and it does work with a head set but I was unable to get it to work with my usb mic.
It only seems to write to the Dragon Pad, I tried using Notepad ++ but it didn't seem to work.

Administrator settings are greyed out on windows too. So that's as it should be. Edit: You have to close out the user to access the administrator settings. They are accessible under cx but the scheduled tasks don't work. Minor as you can do them manually.

Tested Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.1. Works better than just plain 10. Still the dragon bar doesn't draw completely.
It manages to launch Firefox or IE if they are on the same bottle.

Further tested is hampered by a severe slowdown CX is having on my Ubuntu 64 system (Inter Core 2 Duo, Ati 4850). Edit: this at least partly due to the need to upgrade the ATI driver. Updated to 9.8 and lot's better now.

The "Spell that" dialog doesn't work at all on the DragonPad. This can crash the app. so be careful.

Hmm. Dragonpad would be enough for me.. happy to cut and paste. However, the core ability to improve accuracy is the 'spell that' training. Does crossover 8 improve things?

The above testing was done on crossover linux 8. The one that just came out is crossover games 8. The other one's been out for quite a while now. 'Spell that' doesn't work. However still a quantum improvement from the functionality of the previous versions of Dragon it seems like. I gave it a Bronze because it works, sort of, but with rather bad bugs and issues.

Also notice on the advocates section the version of linux or crossover is labeled.

This program now doesn't install under cx 9.

Yes it does install under cx 9 but it's not really stable !

It needs some wine tricks :

wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks

sh winetricks gdiplus (a must have)

sh winetricks fontfix fontsmooth-gray gecko sound=oss (don't know if it's really a need...)

Once installed, "natspeak" works fine. I just tried standard training and experienced some phrases in the the Dragon Editor which works flawlessly.
But in the sudden DNSP 10 crash without reason.

After that, every time I tried to use DNSP 10 again, it's really a pain : really unstable, takes long time to initialize, long time to load the user file and finally crash again...

I guess I'm not yet accustomed to use this program with CodeWeaver and I think there are still some improvements to plan.
But this is my first experience with CW and I sure need a tutorial on how to better use it... ^^

EDIT :

Finally, DNSP 10 under CW 9, works better that I thought, but as I said above it's quite a different experience and completely different philosophy sing DNS 10 under standard Windows 7 and under Linux with CodeWeaver. The first problem was that CW created 2 different icons with almost the same name "Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.0" and "Dragon Naturally Speaking" which link onto two different programs, and it's the first one that causes me so much troubles !!!
The first load of the user file still takes a long time, but I'm not sure if it's due to DNS and CW or if it's because of my particular Linux system. My test system is a Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 version installed over a Windows 7 partition with Wubie and dual-boot... ^^ That may explained why my linux system is not as fast as it should be with a true linux partition...

The second thing is that I'm still a complete dummy user in using DNS and CW and I feel more comfortable using it under Windows 7 for the moment. And the reason I keep this configuration is that my Notebook is a Acer 1825ptz with capacitive touchscreen and I have not found a good multitouch driver for this computer (calibration issues). For the moment, I only have a working monotouch driver.

I wish I could completely switch to a true Linux system in a near future.......

😀

I'll try DNS 10.1 on by 32bit Ubuntu system and report in a day or two.

I tried to install DNS 10.1 on my Ubuntu 10.04 system with the latest CrossOver Pro. It did not install. Disappointing.

Same deal for me.
How come this program has a silver rating?

Successfully installed it into a MAC with CXM 9.1 with the following caveats.

  1. During the install one has to manually tell the installer that the program finished installing.
  2. Doesn't seem to work full screen, only on an emulated desktop so far.
  3. Graphics don't draw 100% perfectly but not bad.
  4. The "spell that" command throws up a COM error and the whole bottle crashes. Not fun.
  5. Just in case I disabled the Install Shield automatic updates. I soooo hate this program but it's necessary for Dragon's function.
  6. The program will sometimes not let you exit. Forcing you to quit the bottle.
    Still testing.
    What works surprisingly well.
  7. Dictation! The in-built microphone of my Mac-book was detected and it works sooo much better than any mic on the PC ever did. I mean EVER.
  8. Responsiveness. It's more responsive than on my PC/Windows install. Though that probably has to do with the mic.

Once the product has been activated it works in full screen but I haven't tested the bar as a floating one. Tried docked bar at top and that worked.

@CHAC
I tested DNS 10.1 on my Windows 7 64 bit and it was a nightmare. It slowed the whole computer down so I uninstalled it, which was also a nightmare since that darn Install Shield won't go away. I keep finding it slowing my boot with zombie processes.
Do you have a good experience with it?
Also what's so different between using DNS on windows than on crossover? I mean beside using OS commands.

InstallShield apparently has an uninstall utility that doesn't break DSN.
Here is the link:
installshield uninstall

Hi,

Going by that log....;

fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly L"Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC" (8.0.50608.0)

I've seen this before -- iirc one part is a missing microsoft visual c++ 2005 redistributable package - if
you haven't already installed that runtime support into the DNS bottle, that's what I would try next...

...however, I have seen this problem in cases where the microsoft visual c++ 2005 redist is already
installed alongside .NET 2.0 in the same bottle -- I haven't found/were unable to isolate the exact cause,
but came away suspecting it was something to do with the .NET versioning ...ie; the ,NET 2.0 SP1 or SP2
versions (which are currently not supported in crossover) might be creating the assemblies the program
was expecting, and the base .NET 2.0 which we currently use can't do this, or that this was something the
program was expecting .NET 3.0 to do (or another version of same which is also currently not working in
CX)....-or-....there's some issue with our handling of .NET 2.0 intrinsic, and it causes this.

Hope this helps...

Cheers!

Installed the 2005 and 2008 visual c++ redistributable packages to no (noticeable) effect.
The "spell-that" dialog still causes a crash. Not .Net libraries installed in the bottle.
DNS comes with it's own 2008 visual c++ redistributable package I'm guessing it only looks at that one.

(duplicate post)

What's the difference between a fixme and an err on the log?

Hi,

It's a bit of a gray between these two, hard to nutshell...however,
I did find the following resource which is about as good an exposition
on these debug messages as you're likely to find 'out there'...see;

http://wiki.jswindle.com/index.php/Debugging_Wine

I guess the footnote I can add to that, is even if you see err: or fixme:
messages in logs (even without wine debug), they are not always indicative
of the actual problem you may be experiencing with the win32 app - some many
apps run fine despite encountering this things (which is why it's a bit gray
to explain 8)...

Hope this helps...

Cheers!

I'm new to WINE/Crossover. I had no problem installing some programs, but DNS 10.1 has me stumped.

The program seems to instal (DNS indicates a completed installation)l, but the installer screen on Crossover only shows an installation bar about halfway completed. A member on this forum writes, in part, "..During the install one has to manually tell the installer that the program finished installing..."

Can someone tell me how to do that?

That.

Easy peasy
Make sure you have the details drop down on the installation dialog visible.
Then look for the process that says "installing so and so" and look for the 'cancel' button next to it.
Hit that and that will manually stop the installation process.

Well, making some progress. The 10.1 is in a "bottle." When I click on it to run the program, I get the following:
"Run time error
...start debugging process"

But, I don't see any log to see if I could include it in my email message.

I would appreciate any help.

Well first things firs:

  1. What version of CrossOver are you using? Note that I had more success with previous version than with present ones.

  2. What system are you using? MAC? Ubuntu? 64bit?

  3. What media are you installing from? The disk or the downloadable 10.1 revision? And what version of DNS is it? The standard?

Finally what procedure are you using for installing? What bottle do you pick? (Should be winxp.) Do you install anything in the bottle before? (You pre-installed the fonts possibly). Etc.

Edit:
Oh I see that did get it installed. I wasn't clear when you said it's in a bottle. If you did manage to install it (without issue...?) then please confirm. Answer the above three questions anyway since it's very useful.

Thanks for your interest and offer of help/support.

Q&A:

  1. What version of CrossOver are you using? Note that I had more success with previous version than with present ones.

A. Recent (latest?) version of Crossover, 10.0,1

  1. What system are you using? MAC? Ubuntu? 64bit?

A: MAC 10.6 on a desktop.

  1. What media are you installing from? The disk or the downloadable 10.1 revision? And what version of DNS is it? The standard?

A: The 10.1 disk, professional (medical) version.

The medical version is completely different from the standard one I have. Suddenly my hopes have gone down on being able to help; the medical version will almost certainly have a form of DRM.

But assuming it didn't, Mac OS X 10.6 I do have so I can trouble shoot.

The best results are when I used the CX 9 version, cx 10 kinda broke it.

But I barely got it running in a very unstable (more for fun than for any real productive work) way.

Try installing core fonts and VC runtime 2008 on the bottle before installing and run the install-shield remover before starting the application.

Don't do any "training" when you run the app as it may crash there an not help anything.
