Okay, after another attempt, I have gotten Dragon Age running flawlessly. I'm not exactly sure what I did differently this time compared to other attempts. Videos, inventory, character portraits, intro video, menus... All appear to be working. No apparent graphic errors, no crashes. I have the install logs for both the initial Dragon Age install and after patching, in case Codeweavers' staff is interested.
What follows is my step-by-step how-to on installing Dragon Age: Origins from the original PC-DVD:
- Insert DVD, of course.
- Ran the Dragon Age C4P file.
- All dependencies, including PhysX, installed properly.
- Went through the Dragon Age installer. Completed successfully. Gave me Runtime Error 6034. Clicked okay. Crossover reported successful install, refreshed menus, etc.
- Attempted to run unpatched Dragon Age from the launcher. It ran the first run diagnostic utility (graphics setup), then gave me a Runtime Error 6034.
- Installed Dragon Age patch 1.04 into the same Dragon Age bottle. Patch installed successfully.
- Ran the game and it now works correctly. (I did have to enable sound in the .ini file.)
The only thing I noticed that may make a difference from my previous attempts is that I ran the unpatched Dragon Age, allowed it to go through the first run, then patched and ran the game. My other attempts were adding dependencies for the unpatched Dragon Age (which made the patched version prompt an error), and the other was installing the game, and patching without attempting to run it.
Kind of at a loss what happened, but hey, it's working.
