Installation woes (formerly EA Access)

I am installing the Digital Deluxe version of Dragon Age, and the installation seems to go fine until it reaches the point where it needs to run EAAccessInstaller.exe. After a bit of waiting, it gives me a fatal error. After that, I can run the launcher fine, but it does nothing when I click "Play".

If I try to run the patcher, I get an error when opening daorigins.exe for updating the first one or more times, and eventually it appears to work, but after that I actually get a message when I click "Play" that "the game cannot be launched because of a misconfiguration" and that I should reinstall.

I've tried this in both an XP and a Vista bottle, and I've also tried running the EAAccessInstaller manually with what I could guess the parameters were, as the installation window only extends so far horizontally, but I always got "Installation directory cannot be used" Either I guessed wrong or that's what the problem was.

There are a several lines in Unsupported.log, but I can't seem to figure out which of those are relevant. Any ideas?

edit: Oh, and this is probably relevant: I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 with Gnome 2.28

Update: I found where the installation log file goes, and it appears the problem is not with the EA Access installer at all. I watched the log file this last time, installing on a fresh bottle except for an MSI update, and the waiting in the UI happened even after the log file seemed to think things were a success. Here are the relevant lines:

I tried running the 2 failed commands myself manually (through the "Run a Windows Command" deal), and neither of them gave me a response. (I'm not even sure how to get the exit code.)

After reaching the end of the log file and waiting around a while, the "Program Error" screen pops up, which I assume means a segfault.

Any ideas now?

log file seems to be missing something i see it failing since before it tried to run EAAccessInstaller.exe, can ya post a few more lines up. i belive there are several files not installing corretly how are u installing, please a step by step. and by digital did u download it or are u using steam?

i installed the deluxe on my system, 64 bit ubuntu 9.10, and this smells like a permission problem, but like i said gimme a step by step.

Right, I no longer think the problem is with EA Access. I am installing with the installer that came with it, and I downloaded it from IGN's Direct2Drive. The only thing I did before running Setup.exe using the "Install other game" deal, is install WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe, because the "Leveraging Supported Software" sections said it might be useful. That didn't seem to affect the behavior.

Here are the log lines immediately before the few I pasted:

The only error in that section is the Windows Firewall exception one, which I'm sure is not relevant. I haven't done the whole install DirectX seperately first thing, because that part of the process seems to have gone fine. The actions before I started this chunk of the log are just extracting stuff, and that all seems to have gone fine.

I spot-checked a few of the permissions, and everything seems to check out. Both installation files and bottle are in my user space, and I have write permissions to everything I checked. DataSetup.exe doesn't have execute permission, but neither do Setup.exe or PhysX_9.09.0408_SystemSoftware.exe, so I don't think that's a problem.

hey sorry for not getting back to you i honestly don't see anything wrong, was waiting on some of the others to try and pin point the issue.
try this

  1. create a new xp bottle
  2. install DirectX
  3. install .net framework i have 3.0 installed
  4. intall the Visual C++ i have 2008 installed
  5. msxml3 - XML Parser its in the Runtime Support
  6. manually install the PhysX file
  7. install Dragon Age

The vcredist.msi package is one of the ones that failed to install on the distribution I have. I'll try installing that from the Wizard and see if that gets me anywhere, although the fact that that error appears after the other one doesn't give me much hope.

I had also tried installing the NetFx20SP2 separately, and it didn't seem to make a difference. Oddly, though, when I installed it by itself, the license agreement that came up was in what appears to be Chinese. I'll try with version 4 that I'm downloading from Microsoft right now and see what happens.

DirectX seems to install the same whether from the Wizard, from the software package, or just letting the game installer do it.

I'll let you know how this trial goes when I finish, which might be tomorrow. Concurrently, I'm seeing if I can install it on an emulated Windows I have, and perhaps copy the necessary files and registry keys which get set up through DataSetup.exe. I wish these installers gave me a decent error message, instead of just quitting with code 2.

Update: .Net 4.0 installer threw an exception at me and caused a logo to be permanently affixed to the front of my screen. I'll try 3.5...

fergot to mention on the list one other component that needs to be installed, its in the list of runtime support components.

msxml3
for the .net framework just use the version 3 from the list, 3.5 and 4.0 still dont work on crossover games. stick to 3.0 :P

Maybe I'm blind, but I'm not seeing any version of .Net on the list. I see 3 versions of DirectX, 3 versions of Visual C++, MSXML 3.0, 2 DCOMs, 2 OLEs, Windows Script 5.6 and Windows Installer 2.0. I'll download .net 3 and install from the Internet, but I'm not seeing how I can install it "from the list".

Update: Well, 3.0 was an improvement over 4.0 in the sense that it didn't leave a window in the middle of my screen, and it was an improvement over 2.0 in the sense that there was a preamble in English before the Chinese EULA, and an improvement over both in the sense that it gave me a Microsoft error window instead of just crashing and having a Wine window come up. Come to think of it, I'm not sure that's an improvement.

I expected a silver rating would mean it wouldn't be this hard...

.NET is in Crossover, not Crossover for Games. You either have to export/import the bottle to install .NET or you can do it externally as you indicated.

Actually, .NET 1.0/2.0/3.0 will be in crossover-games 9.0 (these things are
already in the beta)...

Cheers!

So, I tried downloading the beta. DirectX, then .Net 3.0 failed, but .Net 2.0, then .Net 3.0 succeeded (all from the list, starting with a fresh XP bottle). I went through the process and it all seemed to go successfully, until running the actual install program, which went through the exact same paces as it went through before (including running the installers for programs/frameworks I already had installed), printed out the same log, and gave me the same error message. Maybe I'll try something else tomorrow.

When you ran DataSetup.exe manually, did you include the parameter from your log file?

Yes. I also tried mangling the arguments into Unix paths and without an argument, but I didn't really expect that to work.
