Pagefault on starting from Steam

I'm having a page fault immediately after starting DA:O with CrossOver 13.0. I'm using the Ultimate Edition downloaded from Steam. If someone wiser in the ways of Wine could advise, I'd appreciate it. From what I can tell from the forum, no one has experienced this particular failure mode before--or perhaps they managed to fix it themselves.

What's happening, exactly, is that the launcher screen comes up, followed immediately by the "serious problem" crash message. The log file is pretty opaque to me, but it appears to be a page fault in wine-loader. I'd gladly post the relevant portion of the log file, but someone will need to tell me which section to post.

I've gone through Steam's troubleshooting algorithm as well as applying the 4Gb patch referenced in another forum post, and I've reinstalled several components in case they got corrupted (C++ redistributable, .Net 2.0 SP2, and PhysX). I've also tried directing Wine to launch the DA:O launcher as Vista, Win7, and Win8 in addition to the usual WinXP, to no avail. That's about all I can think of to do, save randomly changing settings.

This particular machine is an i7 MacBook Air--so it's running HD5000 graphics rather than a discrete chip. I would have thought that would at worst degrade graphics performance to an unusable level, not cause a page fault. (Figured it was worth a try, since Steam had the game on special for $8!)

Ideas? As I said, any help would be appreciated.

It looks like a Steam update released today broke Steam in CrossOver on both OS X and Linux. We're aware of the problem, and are troubleshooting.

We'll let you know for sure when we know more.

Applied the 13.0.1 update--no joy. The issue is not Steam itself crashing, but the DAOriginsLauncher.exe page faulting. Several other games (Skyrim, Fallout:New Vegas) start flawlessly, as does the Steam client.

Any other possibilities you can think of?

The DA: O launcher crash might be related to a Mass Effect 2 launcher crash that I noticed during the CX13 beta cycle.

Luckily you don't really need the launcher to play the game. If Steam does not present you with the option to run either the game or the launcher, you could create an additional shortcut. Select the bottle where DA:O is installed then click the "Run Command" button, browse to where the game executable is installed (somewhere under C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common. Lastly, don't forget to check the option to create a launcher (shortcut). The same "trick" can be applied for the config utility.

HTH

Interesting. If I directly run DAOrigins.exe, it apparently CALLS the launcher--I still get the same page fault in DAOriginsLauncher.exe.

I note from the configuration utility (which still runs) that X11 is active. Perhaps switching to XQuartz would help?

Managed to get past the launcher: install DirectX myself rather than relying on Steam or the CrossTie to do it.

Now DA:O starts but either the graphics are completely messed up or I get a kernel panic, depending on the graphics settings. Sigh.

I've just installed this on my Ubuntu 12.04 64bit machine and.... the launcher works just fine for me. So this might happen only on Macs or only on your certain type of macbook or even just on your machine :/ I did find another bug, but... it's not related to the problem described here. Sorry :(

Kernel panic suggests faulty hardware, crap drivers or an unfortunate combination of both.

Wouldn't be the first hardware defect I've encountered; I will try the install on my other Mac. It's older (2007 vintage), but it has discrete graphics whereas this one doesn't. I've also got a full copy of Windows XP running on it in a VirtualBox that I can try for comparison on that machine. Will post if I learn anything.

i have the same problem, it doesn't start and, even if i go trough the launcher.
it start installing directs then crashes.
can't understand why.
the file error is

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x465064a0 in 32-bit code (0x4800e7ce).

any help?

I had this exact problem. Installing DirectX 9.0 using the Install Software menu option got me past the launcher crash.

Haven't played the game yet though.
