DA: O Will not properly install.

I have a disk image of DA: O and am using that to install. I am using Crossover 11.3 on OS 10.7.5. During installation I noticed that the installer had issues with the microsoft .Net framework "plug-in." (IDK what to call it). Anyway, the installation does finish. When I start up the game, however, I get an error while the intro animation plays. The game crashes and says that there is an issue with the Daorigins.exe file. Am I doing something wrong? How can I fix this? Thank you.

Hi,

Have you tried installing it using the crosstie? I'm not sure, but I believe you should be able to use the crosstie to install the game from your image. You may have to mount the image first.

Maybe a Mac advocate can chip in with more detail?

I tried both using Cross Over alone and using Crosstie to "automatically" install. I had the Disk Image mounted both times just in case. Do you want the error messages?

Let me try and install this Tomorrow. I've been running the Mac version (Cider) for the last year or so and haven't had it in CrossOver but I think I still have the PC installer somewhere.

Ok, thank you for the help.

This test is run using CrossOver 11.3 and a full install of DAO deLuxe (without Awakening), version 1.00 from Oct, 2009. I am using a MacPro 3,1 (2008 model) running on Mountain Lion, 10.8.2 with a ATI Radeon HD 5870 (so not quite standard GPU to put it mildly :) ).

So, I installed the game and the .net stuff threw errors as it normally does and the installer terminated abnormally shortly before the end.

To cut this short, I got the same error as you and as I played around I seemed to sort of remember having done this at least once before (maybe this was the reason why I ended up with the Cider version...).

I will play around a bit more using the info from other threads like this one. Also, I re-installed the game in Parallels where it runs nicely (Win 7) and I will try and maybe get that version across to CrossOver.

As CrossOver 12 is in beta testing now, I might wait for that though.

The stuff about the .net errors is what keeps me in this thread, even if I don't have a Mac. The crosstie for DA:O doesn't usually throw .net errors, at least in Linux. And your comment didn't specify, so I have to ask, did you use the crosstie to install the game?

Yes I tried the crosstie method as well. Whether I used crosstie or installed manually, I got the same errors with .net and the same errors during the intro movie.

Can you try, in a new bottle, to install .net 2 first, then DAO, both via crossties?

I just tried that and got the Microsoft .net services utility installation error after inputting my serial code in the DA: O portion of installation. I decided to proceed with the installation anyway and I get the same errors "Clr: 80004005" and a .exe fail afterwords for the updater.

Oops...when I deleted my blow by blow description this went as well...I did both types of installations, with and without CrossTie.

.NET 2.0 (Service Installation) throws an error on install every time. The installer, independent of any CrossTie/program will fail (at least on my machine). I can't remember though whether this was different in 2009 or not.

I just tried this again to maybe get an error msg but it is a typical Windows error that doesn't say anything.

edit: add a clarification

So is the game broken as of now?

It does look like it but a dumb question from me: is there a reason you don't use the official Ciderport? That one works more or less (not 100% either) and the serial nos are identical (you can use the PC serial on Macs and vice versa).

OTOH, if you are prepared to put in more time and work we could try and get it working by figuring out what is wrong as other people seem to be able to run DAO without (m)any problems. Also, which version of DAO are you trying to install? There is the normal one, the deluxe one, with or without Awakening and Ultimate...I have been trying with DAO deLuxe but I have other versions to play with if needed.

No idea what Ciderport is actually. It's the standard version, not awakening nor deluxe. I don't mind putting effort into getting it to work with CrossOver since I'm sure people will run into trouble same as me at some point. It's just that I'm eating up your, or others', time too.

Don't worry about that. We are not being forced to participate; it's all voluntary :)

Unfortunately, my knowledge of CrossOver isn't as extensive as that of many people here so my help is a bit limited.

Ciderport is my name for the official Mac version made by Transgame(?). As I understand it uses Wine, too but probably not the official version. It runs but not really all that much better than DAO in other Wine versions. I've always had problems with it, too.

I don't really know whether it would be legal to give you a copy but probably not. Even though the serial nos are identical, Bioware is selling the Mac version separately and if you want to download it you have to buy it.

Would it help with legality if I own the game on xbox already >.> Uh, I'm not really interested in trying Ciderports then. What's my next move here? :/

Hmm...I just read on the .net forum that some people needed to install IE 6 before .net would install. I'll try that.

There no longer is an available i.e. 6….I'm going to try 8, then 7 and see what happens.

Edit: After installing 8, it showed that 7 was also installed. I proceeded to try installing .net 2.0 and got the identical error message I have gotten since day one.

I'll try to check if .net 2 is glitchy in the newer version of Crossover, because I don't remember that being an issue a couple of versions ago.

Edit: I installed .net 2 via crosstie, and then DA:O via crosstie as well, and they both worked. I'm on Linux, mind you.

Could it be a new .net 2 issue on Macs?

Could it be DRM by any chance?

I don't know what you mean by DRM :/ If you're able to get it up and running then it would appear that the .net failure is mac-only.

Just picked up a copy of the game. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Okay, installed, patched, crashed, fixed, running at max settings on an iMac with a 6970M
and MacBook Air with Intel HD Graphics 3000. All you need to do is make daorigins.exe
large address aware.

  1. Download and extract 4gb_patch.exe to your Desktop
  2. From CrossOver's Programs menu, select Run Command
  3. In the Run Command window, select the Dragon Age Origins bottle
  4. Lower the Debug Options, click Open Shell
  5. In the Terminal, copy and paste the following:
    cxstart ~/Desktop/4gb_patch.exe ./Program\ Files/Dragon\ Age/bin_ship/daorigins.exe
    image

A backup of the old version is located in the bin_ship directory. Run 4gb_patch.exe after
each patch. This should work fine in Linux, try it out. I will create a new CrossTie in a
few days to fix the .NET Framework errors and create a menu link for 4gb_patch.exe.

Holy christ this works. Thank you so much!

Thanks, sevae!
