I have the same problem you have. Did you solve it?
Can we have more information? What Operating System are you on? What graphics card do you use?
OK, I am having the same problem, too.
I am running Crossover Linux 11.2.0 on Kubuntu Linux 12.04. My machine is a Meoo Design Box DB-N6643/U with Core2Duo T6600 and nVidia MCP79 chipset with a GeForce 8200M.
I installed Steam with the recommended option. Steam runs fine, connected, OK. I went to my Steam library and followed the procedure to reinstall Dota 2 (which I have installed in a Windows 7 machine) in the "new" machine. Steam runs and downloads updates, but I got some DirectX issue when I tried to run Dota 2, so I installed DirectX 9 manually in the same bottle. Things got a little better, now I get the message "Failed to create D3D device! Please see the following for more info. http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=772".
If I run from command line with recommended -novid and -nod3d9ex options, I get the following:
$ /opt/cxoffice/bin/wine --bottle Steam --cx-app dota.exe -novid -nod3d9exUsing breakpad crash handler
Socket layer initialized:

This is all.
I have a late 2010 macbook pro running Mac OS X version 10.6.8 with a 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo processor and 4 gb ram. Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 320M
when I start the game with the launchcommands -novid and -nod3d9ex I get to the first loading screen and get stuck there
I Have a early 2011 Macbook Pro running MAC OSX lion 10.7.4 with AMD RADEON HD 6490M, and I have 4 GB RAM with a 2.0GHz quad core i7 processor..and as stated before, the game just sticks as its on the loading screen
OK, I solved this one. All I did was run wine configuration to run steam (and consequently DotA) windowed.
Not an ideal solution, because I need to lower my resolution (my notebook is not that fast) and choose an appropriate resolution / size for the window everytime I want to run the game. Nevertheless, a solution.
I am sure I have read somewhere there is a way to solve this fullscreen DirectX problem, but can't remember where...
Just hope this helps other users.
Silvio, does your luna hero also has a blinding white light around her when you upgrade her passive? And also KOTL's illuminate look kind of fuzzy and bright?
Yeah, you're right. The game runs, but not flawlessly. After upgrading her passive, Luna is surrounded by a saturated light that makes her nearly unplayable... Sad, very sad. Now, how do we fix this...
