I can't get DX9 to install under Crossover 6.1. It says "An internal system error occurred. Please refer to DXError.log and DirectX.log in your windows folder to determine the problem." This is with the redistributable ~53MB file. Does it work with the online installer? I don't know where to get that though... I thought DirectX was supposed to install fine on 6.1?
If you download and install DX9 through our the CrossOver setup GUI it should work fine. Choose it from our list of installable applications. That is the version we have tested the most.
I'm a little confused...these days, shouldn't we just use the built-in DX9? It seems to be pretty close to being complete (exempting Directplay). Are there any benefits to running native DX?
Even if you install Microsoft's DirectX, CrossOver will still use its built-in Direct3D. Installing DirectX is useful for a few parts which CrossOver doesn't yet have internally. I don't remember which they are. Maybe DirectPlay?
DirectPlay, DirectMusic and DirectShow (quartz.dll) should work as native and to some extent Dinput will even work as native. DirectDraw and D3D will only work as builtin.
How do exactly do I go about installing DX9 from the GUI?
The DirectX package is a normally-hidden "dependency" package. In CrossOver Mac, you can uncheck "Hide service packs and dependencies" in the preferences, on the Install Assistant tab.
