Diablo in 7.1.0

Using a magical work around to access the windows side of the cd (see updating crossover post in forums) I was able to install diablo, and even access the previews and other options. However, the game will not start, and I think the solution might be finding a no-cd crack (that seems insanely hard though). The version I have is 1.08 and for some reason, cannot update to 1.09 (which has an abundance of no cd cracks). The updater responds with a failure to find 'X:\diabdat.mpq' and that it could not find the registry key for deletion. Is this a problem with WINE architecture and windows registry or the game itself? Off to find more answers.

It has been a few years since I played this, but I think it needed to have the MPQ file copied into the installation directory to work properly. Uncertain if this is still the case.

Have you had any luck since September?

Unfortunately no. No new patches exist, and the database it's attempting to access seems to be on the CD drive (X:) despite wanting to update it.

The Storm.dll has the code that looks for some magic on the disc. The NoCDs break that, but don't exactly explain much more than that. They only tamper with this DLL though. You then need to copy the MPQ file (or softlink it and have the disc in the drive) to the installation directory (C:\Diablo by default).

Unfortunately, I got this far, but couldn't the game as it appeared to be a simple black screen. :-/

Am still looking for any further progress.

Edit: I found out that it's merely a rendering problem - the menus don't appear, but the game is still running. Randomly pressing Enter and a few letters (I figure it would ask for a character name at some point), I was able to launch the game and have a run around Tristram, and the first dungeon. Well.... I say "run around", but the character is unable to go beyond a mere trot, it would seem.

Ahhh the memories.

I've submitted some screen shots, but I don't know if they're enough to be accepted. We'll see.
