Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (and PlugY) fail to run in Crossover 23.0

Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, and PlugY, were working perfectly on my 2019 21.5" iMac running MacOS 13.5 Ventura and Crossover 22.1.1. With Crossover 23.0, neither Diablo II: Lord of Destruction without PlugY nor the PlugY-modded version of the game will run. Both Crossover launcher applications bounce once in the Dock and then quit themselves with no error messages.

At the suggestion of Nikolas in Codeweavers tech support, I installed Steam into a new bottle. Surprisingly, Diablo II: Lord of Destruction (both the unmodded and the PlugY-modded version) work perfectly again. But if I delete the Steam bottle, D2 fails to run. Reinstalling Steam allows D2 to run again. I don’t know why an idle application in one bottle should have any effect on a game in some other bottle but that seems to be the case with Crossover 23.0.

Further experimentation has shown that the presence or absence of a Steam bottle makes no difference. Something – and I have not yet determined what that is – triggers the game's inability to launch. A logout of the Mac user account or a restart of the Mac gets the game working again. But at this point, no clue as to what's causing the problem.

Booting to MacOS Sonoma 14.0 and using Crossover 23.5, the problem where D2:LOD fails to run has not occurred. It's only been a few days but I've had my Mac running and my user account active since upgrading to Sonoma on Wednesday. As of now (very early Saturday morning) it's been more than two full days and the problem has not exhibited. Whether that is due to a change in MacOS or a change in Crossover I cannot say.
