Can I assume you've tried to run/install the patch through wine/crossover, and it failed?

Unfortunately the game itself doesn't support that, it doesn't work on Windows either. As the previous poster mentioned, there are hacks that modify the game to get higher resolutions. Those hacks should be used in single player only. If you connect to Battle.net you may get banned for running a modified game client.
