Query wrt Tip&Tricks

Hi,

In one of the Tips&Tricks, it says this....

"Install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 libs into the bottle: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=a7b7a05e-6de
6-4d3a-a423-37bf0912db84"

Is there are particular (technical) reason this is being advised, instead of using
the already existing C4 entry for same?...;

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=7994

Note: the above app does have a crosstie profile & does appear in 'runtime support components' ;
I just edited same so it won't be visible for another 6 hours or so =)

Also, I think it is 'bad practice' to mention Crossover Std/Pro on a C4 page that represents a
game and should be run with Crossover Games -- all this risks is user disappointment, if the
Crossover Std/Pro product, which is optimized for apps not games, ever changes and this title
stops running in that version of Crossover (as there's no onus to keep games running in that
release of Crossover) -- Crossover Games on the other hand, should be used with this title, and
we shouldn't give people the impression Crossover Std/Pro is a viable target ... ie; any future
Crossover Games release that Dues Ex stops working in, will be branded a regression and something
done about that to fix it ; if this game stops working in Crossover Std/Pro, it's most unlikely
anything will be done about that as it's not really a 'regression' ; you should be using CXG =)

Cheers!

Hey Don - I'm a new advocate. Thanks for the feedback. There wasn't any technical reason for specifying C++ 2010 libs from one place vs. the other, I simply overlooked checking the compatibility DB before installing it myself via Microsoft's site. I updated the tip to point to the app ID in the compatibility DB.

I replaced references of CrossOver with CrossOver Games (CXG) to avoid confusion, or as you say, potentially future user disappointment with associating the game with the standard/pro version of the product.

Are you running on a Mac, or Linux? I'd love to get some feedback if you've tried installing the game via these procedures.

Hi,

I run both platforms actually, though I do tend to use linux as my primary platform. No,
I haven't tried installing/running Deus Ex using the various hacks you've posted, I think
mostly because it's more work than just running the title on linux and binding CPU affinity...

That said, and seeing as OSX cannot bind CPU affinity (well, it could if Apple would let us),
such things are probably of more use on the Mac. so I will get to checking them out 'one day' =)

Btw, thanks for taking my advice onboard about keeping the two Crossover products separate
entities, and always be sure to check the C4 database here to check if something you need
is already present.... most things are B^)

Cheers!

I agree the process I posted is definitely a bit involved and adds some hacks into the mix, but given this is my all time favorite game, the effort was well worth it for me 😊 So far only defects I've encountered are minor in-game bugs that I've seen on other platforms like Windows and Mac OS 9.

The variable speed and audio synchronization issues with this game appear to plague Windows XP/Vista/7 users as well who have multiple CPU core systems. The rebuilt launcher was designed to address those problems, and I was happy to find how well it worked in CXG.

CPU affinity under OS X would be nice ... closest I've seen is Apple does provide an API for thread affinity hints: http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#releasenotes/Performance/RN-AffinityAPI/_index.html. Could be a sign though that they are working on enabling true affinity within their OS, someday.

Thanks again for the feedback, will definitely be mindful of keeping the CrossOver products separated and checking C4 when creating a bottle requires additional software.

Take care!

I want to try this new launcher in CXG linux, since I don't think CPU affinity hacks worked for me.

Let us know how it goes!
