Works for me

Not on Steam though - standalone app.

3 step process:
1) In CrossOver Games > Preferences > Installer Assistant, uncheck "Hide service packs and dependencies"
2) Install "Microsoft DirectX Runtime - Modern". This will install the necessary x3daudio dll required.
3) Find where defense grid installed itself. For me, this was in ~/Library/Application Support/Crossover Games/Bottles/WinXP/drive_c/Program Files/Defense Grid-The Awakening/. There should be a config.ini file here. Open that in a text editor and change "FullScreen True" to "FullScreen False".

Attempts to run it at full screen resulted in a blank white screen, but I heard sounds when I moved my mouse around, suggesting the menu was there, but the display system was messed up. (screen resize/draw bug?)

I don't know how far you can get into the game - I just got it running and am quite happy about actually seeing the menu. :)

Ben

I was able to get the Steam version working on two different machines.

First machine, iMac 2.0 Ghz Core 2 Duo with ATI 2400HD. I couldn't get this to launch at full screen, I would just get a white background but I could hear music/menu selections. I made the edits to the config.ini and changed the Fullscreen setting to False. The game then loaded fine and ran great.

Second machine, MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz Core 2 Duo with nVidia 8600M GT. Was able to just install and launch directly from Steam fine. Runs in full screen no problems.

CrossOver Games 8.1.3 under Mac OS X 10.5.8 on both machines.

I run Defense Grid (downloaded from Steam) also in windowed mode (altering the config.ini file), since fullscreen is black. Thanks for the tip (Mac OS X 10.5.8, 2.66Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, Nvidia 9600 GT). Game works perfectly though, towers and aliens are visible in contradiction to other reports elsewhere.

This is a bit of an old thread, but I was wondering if you folk who have the game working with models and all could post some details on how you did it? What applications you installed, esoteric registry settings ans so forth. I would like to see this game working fully as it is a great little game.

For me the game loads and runs, but without the models (no towers or little aliens) but with sound and weapon flashes. I am using Ubuntu 10.04, i5-750 and an ATI 5770.

Hi. I just downloaded Defense Grid for mac the other day since it was recently released by Virtual Programming. I've got the black screen issue. I can hear the music, but it's just a black screen. I'm on a 24" iMac running 10.5.8 w/Radeon HD4850 card. Any help would be appreciated. I'm no techie or a coder, so keep in that mind with your tips. :) Thankfully, a friend found this thread for me when I mentioned to him my problems.

Metropolis Man, do you mean you downloaded the Mac-native version of Defense Grid? If so, I'm afraid this is the wrong forum. This forum is for users of CrossOver, a product that allows people to run Windows programs on their Mac. This would have been useful for you back when Defense Grid was Windows-only (and is still useful for Linux users).

Ah, okay. Sorry, Ken. Yeah, I downloaded the standalone OS X game. Crossover isn't involved at all.
