Any tips on how to get it running? It hangs on joining a server for me with the message "Wait for Host".

The game is not working anymore because of the Battleye software on the servers.
If you find a server without Battleye than you are a lucky guy and you can play.....
Here is the WineHQ entry: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=29534
And the Bugreport regarding Battleye: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31910
There is one test server without Battleye, but I can't even get that one working. Probably will have to wait for the Wine core to get updated in Crossover.

I opted in to immediate updates/betas for DayZ standalone in Steam. After updating, I was able to see and join a dozen or so test servers without battleye using a filter, though the servers may not last.
It played okay on low settings in OSX 10.9 2011 iMac.
