First description of problem (DataTrak vs. CrossOver)

Hi Guys,
Thanks for accepting this app for development in CrossOver! You've made my day! 😅

To explain in more detail: the app itself works flawlessly with CrossOver, which is a great start. What doesn't work is the connection between the dive computer (an Aladin AirZ Nitrox) and my iMac. As I mentioned in my original submission, the connection is made through a memory module (called the MemoMouse) and the Mac, which is hooked-up via USB. This connection worked fine on a PPC using VirtualPC and a full Windoze installation.

However, when I open DataTrak (DT) and hook-up MemoMouse, then start the dive computer's download (through the app), I get a message "MemoMouse not found", so the USB connection doesn't seem to be recognized.

Please let me know if there's any more information I can send...

Thanks,

Roger

Unfortunately, this probably won't work. 😥

The real Windows OS can be thought of as a layer between applications above and hardware below. CrossOver creates a layer on top of Mac OS X (and Linux) so that the top "surface" matches the "shape" that a Windows application expects, allowing such applications to fit and work.

However, CrossOver does not make any attempt to handle the interface at the bottom -- the interface with hardware and hardware drivers. It relies on Mac OS X to handle the hardware. So, generally, only hardware which is handled by Mac OS X is usable in CrossOver.

That doesn't mean there's no hope. There are two possibilities:

1) the device might appear to Mac OS X as a serial device, and it might create a special "device file" in the file system. Such a file would appear in the /dev directory, which is only visible at the Unix command line -- the Finder won't show it to you.

If Mac OS X creates such a device file for your device, you might be able to configure CrossOver to access it. Here are the instructions, although this is untested and we've never actually gotten reports of success.

2) If the Windows program uses the more modern programming techniques for accessing USB devices, then CrossOver may someday be enhanced to support those techniques. However, this will be a long way off.

Sorry I can't provide more encouraging news.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for your reply and efforts ...

I tried your workaround with the terminal entries and must confirm that I couldn't get it to work 😭 When I entered the "ls" command I got so much back that I couldn't see whether there's any difference with the (serial) USB device plugged in or not.

So, what you're saying is: get Parallels? I wanted to avoid that by getting CodeWeaver, instead, actually. Ay other advice?

Thanks,

Roger

Hi Guys,
Just saw that CrossOver 7 is here ... is there any chance it can now handle the serial/USB transfer of data from the Uwatec Aladin AirZ Nitrox? I guess you don't have to worry about the diving equipment, but I still need to transfer between layers to work before I can invest in CrossOver.

Thanks for your reply!

Roger

P.S. If not, is there a chance it will ever be able to handle it?

There have been some fixes to Wine, the technology on which CrossOver is based, regarding serial communications. It's worth a retest.

Thanks Ken; I'll give it another shot as soon as I get the chance and will report back.

Roger

Hey Ken,

Thanks, but again no go ... I can't get the app to recognize the memory module, which is a serial device, but which is connected through an USB adapter. Any and all tipps are appreciated.

Roger
