direct sound error with darwinia. please help!!

Every time i start up darwinia(not multiwinia, that works fine) under steam, when i click on garden, a window always pops up saying

"DirectSound ERROR
C:\Developmen\Darwinia\code\sound\sound_library_3d _dsound.cpp line 309

Direct Sound couldn't create a sound device
Error Code: DSERR_ALLOCATED
The call failed because resources( such as a priority level) were already being used by another caller."

i have tweeked the sound configuration in winecfg, and nothing. please help me, darwinia looks like fun.

specs:
imac osx 10.5.8
2.4 GHz intel core duo

Did you try this tip?

It's still worth a try.

The file that appears to be edited appears to be a game file?

Hi,

The file is a plain-text settings file for the game itself - the problem
is something to do with the way the dsound API has been used in the game,
and how the dsound_winelib is doing things. Copying a native dsound.dll
into the bottle and employing a winecfg library override does not help
(you get the same crash) The work-around I described was as close as I
could get to 'acceptable' sound replay quality, and that procedure should
hold true for the Mac case as well.

Cheers!

Note: the file is formated with CR/LF at end of lines (a Dos/Windows thing)
and so if after editing this file you still get crashing/same error, it could
be you've inadvertently removed the CR/LF from the end of lines and the program
can no longer parse the preferences.txt file.

Do note, the Mac path to the file will differ from the linux path.

how do i reach those files?

That's interesting -- the crash for me happens (consistently) at line 1600 something of the
code used in sound_library_3d_dsound.cpp (part of the game's source code), and I have never
seen it happen at any other line. As we've no way of knowing if the two errors at different
lines of the code are using the same method/calls to dsound API which trigger the crash, it's
really hard to say why this difference exists - it also may cause you to get differing results
from proceedings...hard to be sure...

Cheers!

The Mac path will be something like;

/Library/Application Support/Crossover Games/Bottles/[bottle_name]/drive_c/Program Files/Steam/steamapps/[steam_username]/darwinia/preferences.txt

(where [bottle_name] is the name of the crossover bottle you have things installed in)

Finally, if you need any more help with this, please start a new thread
in the 'correct' place around here...ie; this game's C4 forum page...see;

http://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=4740;forum=1

Cheers!
