steam not supported?

I am trying to play counterstrike on my MacBook (2Gh Intel Core 2 Duo). When I try to download steam from valve's website (steampowered.com) I get this "Steaminstall.msi" document, which OSX prompts me to find an application to open. When I try to download counterstrike and am prompted to download steam, I get an error message that says steam is not registered protocol. I have searched forum threads for the answer to this protocol question, and steam's website simply states that this problem has been solved and to just try again - and that steam isn't supported for mac! How is this possible if people are playing cs on mac? My understanding is that in order to install cs you need to use steam. What am I supposed to do? Can someone walk me through the process of getting counterstrike up and running? This very website states that cs can and does run on mac using crossover - so how do I do it???

Use the Install Software feature of CrossOver to install Steam. CrossOver knows how to download it for you, although if you've already downloaded it you can just point to the .msi file.

Once Steam is installed, you can download Counter-Strike within its interface.

i have downloaded crossover and want to download steam, but halfway through the download a window pops up saying "steam needs Core Fonts installed in order to run. The only option i have is to "try and install anyway which my cause unpredictable results" i have done this and steam will not work properly. Does anybody else have this problem when downloading steam from crossover?

CrossOver installs an package called "Core Fonts" before it runs the steam installer; that should work automatically, crossover downloads the fonts and installs them. This is needed because Half Life 2 depends on the exact sizes of the fonts. The Mac/Linux fonts render slightly bigger and cause buffer overruns which result in game crashes.

If I understand you correctly, I think that CrossOver is trying to download and install the fonts, but it is encountering an error.

The problem may be due to an error during downloading. Do you have a proxy server configured for HTTP? CrossOver may have trouble interacting with certain kinds of proxy servers.

Similarly, if you have a firewall configured, it may be preventing the download.

Lastly, CrossOver may succeed in downloading the font installers, but may fail when trying to run them. I don't know why that might be happening. CrossOver should create an installation log file. It can be found at:

(your home folder)/Library/Application Support/CrossOver/Bottles/(bottle name)/drive_c/windows/temp/AllFonts.log

That file may indicate what's going wrong.
